anser2
Two days ago I had a nice little session on some rape . There were not many pigeons about but by useing 25 shell decoys and a magnet 99% of the pigeons came nicely and I ended up with 20 birds. The following day however was very different. After touring several potential drilled fields I settled on a rape field 3 miles away that apeared to have a nice flightline over it. Of course the flightline dried up as soon as I set up. Two hours later and with just one pigeon in the bag I moved. After checking the recent drillings again ( which were empty ) I set up on another rape field a mile further east. One early bird decoyed nicely , but that was it for the next half an hour. Hundreds of birds were flighting past only 60-100 yards off , but they were not interested in the decoy \ magnet set up. tried all sorts of things , changed the hide position , decoy patten , switched off the magnet ect , but they would not respond. I moved to get under the flightline leaving the decoys behind just taking a couple of boxes of shells with me. Hideing was difficult and makeing a hide was out of the question as the flightline was constantly changing and ended up 300 yards from where I started. The hedge was very sparce and low , if i tried to take shots from over the hedge the birds spotted me at once and jinked back on the strong wind , making impossible shots. The only answer was to crouch low and snap shoot the birds as they passed along the other side of the hedge through holes on the hedge. Two hours later the flightline dried up and with just 3 shells left I had 30 birds in the bag. Back to the decoys for a coffee and the pigeons sudenly switched onto the decoys ( I could see them from my hedge and only a couple of birds showed any interest while I was shooting the flightline. It was getting close to roost time , but another half a dozen birds were added to the bag. Its so easy to set up your decoys and stick to them all day , but watch what the birds are doing and if neccessary leave your decoys and hide behind and go to where the birds are even if the odds of getting a shot look slim. HeadShotHoncho
Yep, they aint half. One day they were all drinking from a stream at the same time (by the minute ) for two days and then the next day they never showed up, drinking at the water trough instead
