silver_fox
I am thinking of doing this course later on in the year. Can anyone who has done it tell me what the course entails. I have just received some blurb from the BDS but it doesn't really cover the sylabus and practical part. Also - not having a deer calibre rifle on my ticket is it worth contacting my FEO to sort out a variation for one before the course?

On their website there is a full outline of the course and the exams, detailing the various tasks/assesments and how they work, sorry, cant find the link at the moment. Depending on the course location you do not need your own rifle as they often have an "estate" rifle to borrow for the shooting tests. I however applied for my variation in advance of the course at the end of this month and they granted me .243 without too much hassle. Dunkield
You do a fair bit of classroom stuff and then take a safety test and a shooting test. When I did mine I took the shooting test a few weeks before as the BDS had a range day at Bisley, I borrowed the instructors rifle, but I understand now the BDS have been given some rifles to lend out. The theory was over 3 days and then the 4th day was the safety test and shooting test for those who hadn't taken it.
