Shot Gun Advice

Recommended Posts

Hello, hoping some one will be able to help me, heres the situation.

I have permission on a local farm to shoot over 170 acres. When i first got this permission i thought it would be the perfect time to upgrade from my PCP air rifle to a shotgun <_< However after a much heated debate with my mother, who still thinks im 13 rather than 20. She basically said "no cabinet is being installed in my wardrobe" ( the only place we could have it where it is out of the way ! )

So anyway. The farmer lets me borrow his shotgun everytime i go up to the farm allthough its over 30 years old, double triggered and covered in rust it does do the job. After talking through with the farmer (who has been a friend for many years) he suggests that i can buy a shotgun and keep it in his cabinet on his ticket. This did seem ok at the time but what about if i want to shoot somewhere else ? or go clay shooting ? i wouldnt be able to take it anywhere on my own !

So this morning i had lightbulb idea moment ! ( i hope this works ! ) Would i be able to apply for a shotgun certificate but say the shotgun(s) where being kept in the farmers cabinet which is certified with the shotgun on my certificate

in short. is it legal to have a SGC with a shotgun listed on it which is kept in somebody elses cabinet.

Many Thanks in Advance !

yes mate, you can keep it anywhere as long as its in a secure place, and can only be accessed by somebody with a SGC. you can keep it in his case as long as he's licensed, just put his address in the box that asks for ''details of where the shotgun is to be stored''

in short..... yes

a friend of mine does it for the same reasons as you......

but it will have to go on farmers tickets as well.....

if you have access to cabinet when he is not there ie through his wife then his guns have to be on your ticket as well but if you can only get the gun when he is there then just yours on your ticket.

shaun. many thanks

i WONT be able to have access to his cabinet whilst he is not there. (the reason so is because he has firearms in his cabinet also)

so MY gun only goes on MY ticket. even though it is kept in HIS cabinet ? ?

many thanks again. im off to the gun shop this afternoon for a quick look!

i know i wont be able to. thats why i said i will only have access whilst he is there. in other words, him opening the cabinet handing me the SG then closing the cabinet and locking it.

i will not be able to get my gun unless he gives it to me.

As your mother does not want a cabinet in the house, do you have a garage that it can be fixed in? Although the police are not very keen on this, especially if the garage is not connected to the house, it has been done.

Also if your cabinet were fixed in the wardrobe, it would have to be bolted through the wardrobe and into the wall, it makes decorating difficult! It also has to be fixed to a solid wall.

I would try and work on your mother, you are going to create yourself all sorts of access problems by using your farmers cabinet.

bob, ferret man.

ive tried so hard. But my mum brings out the old story of.

i knew of someone who got killed with a shotgun in a accident!

so therefore none in the house what so ever!

we do have a garage which isnt attached to the house.

id much rather keep it in his cabinet to be honest. a small price to pay but the only way i will get a shotgun!

+ its a money saver on the cabinet for me !!!!

From what I can gather then:

1. You want to keep your SGC in the farmers cabinet - that's fine; just state that on your application.

2. The farmer will need to have your SGC on his certificate because he has access to it when you're not there.

3. You do not need the farmers guns (irrespective of whether they are rifles or shotguns) on your certificate provided you cannot access them when he is not there - which you have already said is the case.

4. FM made the point about borrowing a gun for up to 72 hours without it appearing on your cert; this is the maximum amount of time a gun can be in the possession of a SGC holder and not shown on their certificate, hence your gun has to be on the farmers SGC.

What you suggest is fine and not a lot of hassle provided you are happy with the potentially restricted access to your gun as you are reliant on the farmer being available to give you your gun.

Hope this is of some help.

p.s. the farmer should not have to get his cabinet checked again as all he is doing is adding a gun onto his certificate.

Well we go shooting together and i use his spare one on his land under his instruction

many thanks for your concern though ferretman

Before this develops into an "is this legal" debate... it is, perfectly.
