another roe head question!

Recommended Posts

Roughly skin the head then saw the head to your desired shape/angle, this can be part or whole, Don’t worry if you’re a little off as after boiling you can grind/file the angle but be careful as this is when most 'trophies' get ruined. You can buy a jig for the purpose but none of the professionals I know bothers with one but do make sure your saw is sharp. Take the jaw bone (if you want to preserve that as well) and the head and slow boil for about an hour taking care not to let the antlers get wet, use a wire support to hold them above the waterline. A spoonful of bicarb will help the cleaning process. After boiling (don’t overdo it or the bone will be too soft and disintegrate) take off all the meat using suitable tools and discard the fine bone structure in the nasal passage.

Use peroxide to clean the bone BUT don’t soak it. Dab at it with cotton wool soaked in the peroxide and leave to dry.
