reedbradshaw
just to keep you updated im looking to buy a SG when my SGC finally arives ( obviously ! ) and i have my heart set on Hatsan Escort, from what ive read on here they seem perfect for me. reliable and cheap before any one says anything im 100% i want this rifle however, after visiting the gun shop they tell me they have got them in various "inches" ( i think they went in in half inch increments....what does this mean ) a chap at work is an experianced shooter of both game and clays and tells me for what im going to use it for which is rough shooting the chokes will not make a deal of difference, to be honest i think he was just trying to side track a lengthy conversation about guns as he did seem busy! what chokes are suitable for different conditions and cartridges, i understand the digits on the side eg 28 gram load size 8 shot. what would you recommend for pigeon shooting both in flight and on the deck, running rabbits & hares. and foxes, hoping to go with a friend and hold the lamp first before i try experiance & all that i have shot clays a few times now and im not too bad, ive also been shooting in the field along with my friend who has a SGC and have had great success with rabbits and pigeons

Baldrick
If the smith is referring to the chamber length in inches, you're best off with a 3"-chambered Hatsan. You're unlikely to need a longer chamber length (i.e. 3.5" magnum) unless you're going to be wildfowling. If you're talking about the barrel length, I'd go for a 26" barrel (I prefer fast-handling shotguns). I use 32g #6s for pigeon/rabbit/general vermin. I use 42g #1s or 50g BB loads for foxes. Stick with 1/4 choke in the gun, and don't worry about whether changing the choke will improve your accuracy (it probably won't). As Baldrick says, 32g 6's pretty much do it; other than that, always make sure the length of your cartridge fits in your gun. WGD
Trussman
The 3.5 inch Escort won't cycle anything lower than 36g. 30-32g No5s are good for Rabbits. Don't know about Hares, but they need a bigger dose than a rabbit.
Hardy
5's are fine for Hares too - we have quite a few on our shoot so I stick with 5's for everything on those days. They are fine for pheasant but a little heavy for partidge but hey they stop flying!! For Pigeons I use Eley HB Pigeon which I think are 6.5's Don't worry about the chokes - Keep 1/4 in & you won't go far wrong. When you get your gun it's worth having it fitted properly - most gunshops will do this with you or reccomend someone & then head off to your local clay ground for some practice. This will let you put a lot of rounds through it in a short space of time so you get the feel of the gun & how it shoots as well as freeing up the action - all new guns tend to be a bit stiff. Maiden22
All good advice . If I were you, though, I'd try as many out as you can before buying. Things like barrel length depend largely on personal preference, what suits your style, build, etc. Wouldn't worry too much about chokes. Mine are fixed, and I had no idea what they were (until some helpful types on here deciphered the marks for me - thanks chaps ). There's a saying about choke giving you inches , but you miss in feet (stop sniggering at the back). A good fit is probably the most important factor on any gun.
