Dave-G
I was out at one of my air rifle cleared sports field permissions at daylight this morning, only got a few bunnies and spent some time clearing fallen branches off the field behind it where I also have permission and working on a lay-up area. After a couple of hours a car turns up with an old guy who trespasses with his dog around the field instead of walking across between the two "footpath posts" We've had strong words in the past because I was asked to deter all dog walkers from the field apart from the footpath. He's been going there for years and refuses to stop. He's not doing any harm but a new estate is being built near the fields and the groundsman wants to nip any new dog walking in the bud so we try to stop those who have done it for years from setting a precedent. We now have what I thought was an uneasy truce so I decided I'd clear off now the public are turning up, not wishing any confrontations while I have a gun on me. As I made my way back to my car I checked the padlock on one of the locked gates when a kid about 10 or 12 came running around a corner of the lane outside with his dog on a lead, and saw me through the wire mesh gate wearing camo, with camo gloves and face veil shoved up to the top of my head carring a rifle. Well the lad sort of gawped a couple of seconds then went ape and ran off shreiking "GRANPAW GRANPAW GRANPAW" a few dozen times as he legged it down the road. I waited three or four minutes for "granpaw" to show to see what was what but no-one came and it went quiet so made my way back to the far end of the field where my car was parked outside another gate. As I approached my car old grumpy dog walker passes by and I says alright? "I was" say's he" over his shoulder and walks on with his dog muttering something about rabbits. "Ah" sez I as I move towards the car to stow my gun and clean out the rabbits. Five minutes later sees me driving down the lane and into the new estate to try and find a young boy with a dog and his Grandpaw. Well now't to be seen so I goes off to try and bump into a farmer I had'nt seen for a while. Some time later I got a call from the rugby club groundsman to ask if I had been up the fields - yup. HE HE he says, an armed response unit had been called out after someone in camo had frightened someone and might have pointed a gun at a father and son - or something like that. I asked him to give them my mobile number and he said he'd do it straight away so expect a call. I went home and stowed my gun then rang the local nick - they didnt know about it so put me on to someone else who also did'nt know but both had just come on shift. She listened to my tale as she looked for something relevant then said someone will call me right back. Well that was nearly an hour ago and I've been up all night - having gone shooting after a nightshift. I need my bed but don't want to pee off anyone who might be taking details off the boy or his dad - or possibly the old grump who seems to dislike me enough to twist things around a bit. I aint waiting up any longer. EDIT: The old grump is not the kids "granpaw" - in case this bit sounds confusing.
