millo2
Erm not too sure, I use my dog for both picking up and working, but he works better. I think the same principles apply either way
eugene molloy
In a word; yes. A picking up dog needs to be very steady during the drive, sitting still, not whining or running in, and be able to take hand and whistle signals at a distance; in short he should have perfect manners. Not many Springers get to that stage, so usually Labs are preferred. regards Eug
MadSpringer
Hi Darren, The basics are the same but you would concentrate on the areas Eug has already pointed out. Not many Springers get to that stage, so usually Labs are preferred Labs are the preferred choice but Springers can make excellent picking up dogs, they just need a lot of work (I have the grey hair to prove it! ) Cheers! harryhawk
Not many Springers get to that stage, so usually Labs are preferred Down here on the thick Devon bramble banks the Labs have a hard day of it. Nothing enters the hard stuff like a spaniel (springer & cocker). Most of the local shoots employ pickers up with springers. Labs are ok hoovering around the pegs or out on the water, but you can't beat a good springer for covering the rough stuff.
