MartinP
Hi all need alittle advice for my German Shorthaired Pointer Bane. He a year old now and training has progressed very nicely. Retrieving dummy seen and blind every time to hand. He has retreived a dead pigeon to hand on the occasions i have thrown it for him.(taking it slowly with real birds) He stops on the whistle and heels nicely. I am after advice with regards to progressing his pointing skills. In the field and park he will point at birds(mainly pigeons, doves unfortunatley not come accross game yet) when sees them but will walk slowly towards them. he will stop when told to but will walk again resulting in the bird flying away. Rabbits are a ****** as he sees them from a distance, they run and he wants to chase them and i think he wants to do the same with the birds. I am hoping as he matures and with field practice he will get the idea of what his job is but is there anything i should be doing to help him Many thanks
new to the flock
Martin, What I do is teach a whoa command so that the dog locks up on it and stays locked until released. This will then allow me to work the dog on first a tethered barn pigeon, progressing to placed caged birds in the field......either half cages that can be pulled off the bird with a string, or bird launchers......and then into planted birds. It also allows me to work rabbits in an area on a long lead and get points instead of chases, controlling the dog through his learning. In the end you finish with a very steady dog that locks on game from a distance that you have set up ......for me it is at first scent as our grouse and pheasants are very jumpy......the dog will come into a solid point on his own and stay there until released to retrieve, flush, or find another. If you are interested let me know and i will put some things together for you. NTTF

new to the flock
Martin, As said I would make sure to have a whoa command inplace before going to the cage. This is so that you do not create a charging in problem or a chasing problem. Give me a couple of days and I will get some photos and an out line started for you.
