Wookie
Ted's coming back from school in a couple of weeks and I need to get him a kennel sorted out for the back garden. I've got a space sorted out for him (alongside the fence, about 4' by about 8') and I was looking for advice on both the brand of kennel to go for, or ones to avoid. Of course, the "man" in me wanted to build one myself using wood and nails, but I have been advised that, in light of my DIY skillz (apparently lacking), I should consider buying one. My original design was for something with chain link overmost of one side with the exception of the sleeping area... It seemed so simple when thinking about it. Anyway, let me know who I should be going for/looking at to buy one, or if there are places I can buy suitable panels/supportes/etc from to make my own in an easy and professional looking way. Thanks all. Wookie
pavman
Wookie 3X4 and 30" high MDF hinge lid to clean out easy peasy, However a nice cheap 6X4 or 7X5 pent roof shed with an access hole in the door works very well, you can also add a chip board shelf above bedding area for all the bits, or hang an old kitchen cupboard, full door allows for cleaning out etc
Wookie
Cheers Pavman. I was looking at the cheaper of the two options at http://www.caninekennels.com/ (Aston and Ettiley), but they seem like a lot of cash for what you get. I swear I could do a similar job with some 10mm ply, some link fencing and a few lengths of 3x3 post... Seriously, how hard can it be? Wookie
A very good point... Where I have it planned, there's a nice little drainpipe I can use for the run-off and washing out, assuming I can use the gutter exit for that. All I need to go is lay the concrete base with a slope towards the drainpipe. If I fit a drain/plug in there before concreteing it should all just work. Hawkeye, nice kennel, but that's even more pricey than the one I picked!
Highlander
Building site security fencing makes brilliant panels for a run, easily cut and welded for a door too. High quality commercial kitchen (lino) flooring and a wooden kennel works fine. Made mine with a (little ) help from a friend to be moveable then didn't! Paul LTW
Hi, just recently treat myself to a new double kennel, I looked and looked and the best (if brass is no option) would be the galvanised set ups from Mitton hall - Police dog handlers use these and are incredibly tough and really easy to maintain. In the end i went for a 14 * 4 foot 5 foot high double kennel, its bang on for my two lads and made of really good materials, mine cost £450 including delivery and putting up, The bloke i got mine from advertises on Ebay and i can thouroughly recomend him. This is a link to one of his items but if you contact him direct with your requirements he'll do you a quote no bother. Wookie
Thanks for the links guys. I think I'm going to have to actually make something myself though. I did some measuring list night and the area that I have to work with is not exactly a regular rectangle. What I'm thinking now is to lay a concrete base, add some uprights in at the right intervals at the front, then just use marine ply and shiplac to construct the sides and roof, with heavy guage fence mesh for the run. I reckon I have 8 foot plus to work with for the total length, and I can build out onto the deck _slightly_ to make it a bit wider, but right now it's big enough for Ted's Tuffie. Also, there's a bank holiday weekend coming up. I've got some time off planned as well, so I could be a busy boy!
