radio1ham
well just wondering if anyone uses these machines and wonder if any of you that use these machines have ever had a go at making their own bullet moulds
HDF
Dad's got a nice old 60's lathe, really robust and will still take half thou cuts. Fine accuracy but for molding you would need to work out the castings shrinkage. And no, I haven't made bullet molds.
starlight32
well just wondering if anyone uses these machines and wonder if any of you that use these machines have ever had a go at making their own bullet moulds You would be far better off getting your moulds pattern made by a tool maker from an actual bullet head. There is always a local retired chap who plays around in his workshop. If you do want to try yourself you will need some tasty tooling on a vertical mill to cut a bullet mould. flying cyril
I use a HAAS 3 axis cnc milling machine, learnt to program, set and operate it only 18 months ago. What a massive payrise I got too for changing job roles, t'was well worth the effort. Now I can afford to go to the shop and buy pellets. OK, I'm only a "newbie" CNC programmer with a hell of a lot to learn, but I cant see any way that it would be possible to make a mould that small. I've made moulds (from a cad/cam programm with about 3/4 of a million lines of info) for simple rubber mouldings on waterproof cable ends, but they were using cutters of no less than 10mm diameter. Now the bloke who trained me has left and I'm on my own. Theres only one way to find out though, I'll get (or the company will) the smallest cutter I can find and see what happens when I try to make a pellet mould out of a lump of ally billet. nagantino
Midwayuk the uk site for www.midway usa will get you most molds at a great price and witha relatively short waiting period. Iwould love to have a go {I ahve some access to cnc} but getting them via the postman is better. I cast a few calibres and I know that any, and I mean any problem with the mold is a pain.
