Hi,

i really would like to get into pest control, ive sent loads of cvs off and most i see i have to have bpca or biological qualifications, *** whats happend to just bating/trapping/netting or shooting them?

ive thought about going round posting business cards but i need guaranteed work, not hoping i get a call in"if you get what i mean".

any tips or tricks or big fancy technical words that will impress are really welcomed.

thanks

hi,

thanks for reply and i see what you mean, free shooter cant do as much as a pest controller and cant do it on a regular basis unless there rich and can afford thousands of rounds and cartridges.

wages aint that bad and i have no qualifications so its a case of work in a factory or some thing like that or do some thing i enjoy.

i know a few pest controllers that do a lot of rabbit/pigeon and fox work.

rabbits dont just pop up on rail way tracks either as i was out with a pest controller that does them on industrial estates.

i really need advice on what i should put on my cv or if any one knows any self employed pest controllers that turn down work my end.

HI Martin a good arguing point between paid pest/vermin control and free pest/vermin control is,joe bloggs that does it for sport or a hobby will not be too bothered about going out shooting if the weather is not very good or too cold.but the bloke that does pest control for a living will be out shooting etc as it is his bread and butter.not many farms have a budget for pest control and some farms have in house pest control.it takes a long time to get established in the pest control game as too many people are at it and so many lads do it for free.you would need to start off with kicking bait boxes and just hope that you can get a couple of customers ie golf courses, race horse stables or wealthy land owners and just build up from there.it might seem the ideal career but trust me it isnt.if you did decide to take the path into pest control you would need to learn all about health and environment issues, what rodenticides you can and cant use, risk assesments, method statements.you would also need to gain some experience by going on courses such as the NPCTA or BPC it realy is a minefield.also to be competetive you would need to be able to price up work. if you need any further help or advice you have got my phone number,or send me a pm atb paul sorry forgot to add that you would also need public liability insurance of about £2 million for most companies this will alone cost you about £400 a year

Hi paul,

thanks for reply and i hope you are well,

exactly my point mate,a pest controller will be there when its raining lol,i even think my self when i try to get a shoot for free,i dont want to say il be here every day as that would cost me fuel/ammo and of course a job,so impossible to offer what a pest controler can.

think i may just put my self in college for a few of them courses "thanks for giving me the correct names for the courses"!.

ive seen a few job vacancies where full training is give and i have applied "finger crossed".

i know exactly what you are saying mate and i also put on my cvs that i would need to learn how to poison certain vermin.

i want to really get in to it as my job options are not wide and i enjoy pest work,i know theres a difference between pest control and sport but the options i have at moment im really interested in pest control, its the only thing thats motivated me for a while.

i would not want to get into it self employed like your self as i dont have the knowledge for it tbh,my experience is not to good either but im keen to learn as you know.

i would just like it like this,

van traps and gear, a call off the boss saying we have blady bla at blady bla address and you will need to use so and so poison and traps and im on my way, as i say mate and im happy to admit it as im honest like that,i dont have the knowledge for certain stuff and would need some kind of training.

im getting stuck with my cvs, i tell the truth and nothing but the truth "thats just me" but when i look over my cv i can see employers thinking this lad dont have certain experience or knowledge but if its a employer that is offering training or even simple instructions on what i will have to use on certain jobs im sure i could do it with out a problem.

another idea is what you told me with business cards and you have posted in your post but i dont think i have enough knowledge to give proper estimated prices and i would imagine id over work my self by saying some thing like il be here every day when i really only have to come once a week.

poison is my main problem a long with knowledge of certain vermin control.

think i got to do some real reading on pest control.

will speak to you soon paul,

any more tips appreciated

Well, firstly, you say that most people won't want to spent thousands of cartridges on shooting something thereselfs, so they pay for a pest control chappy to do it? - No, this won't happen because you'll charge me for the cartridges you use, and then charge me for the time.

The other point in, shooting in the pest control buisness is very, very rare. Most of the time you'll either be using various traps, or gassing, or maybe even falonry, you've got to have a PC mind about all this, and intill you are more PC than a Policeman, you won't get anywhere in the buisness.

think you've miss understood me on the 1st 2 lines you have write mate and i think you should read before you post next time.

i said most people who shoot for free will not be able to spend on thousands of cartridges and shooting for a land owner.

if the land owner wanted them to be on there land every day it would quite simply be to expensive unless they were getting payed so thats where i said that people who shoot for free don't have a chance against a pest controller as a pest controller gets payed for his work and there for he gets payed for what ever he controls and so there for can afford to do what a free shooter can not!!!

if you are going to criticise people at least read what they have write first my friend!

i appreciate your last 2lines and all you have done is pointed out what i have already wrote, that's if you would take the time to read what i have wrote.

i have already thought about getting a hawke, even from before i even thought about the pest control work and i understand most work may be gassing and trapping but not 100% of it,i can assure you i know pest controllers that shoot rabbit/pigeon/crows on a regular basis i all depends on location.

my location would probably be trapping and gassing and may be a few pigons on rail way tracks but head the other direction and i would imagine fox and rabbit with pigeon.

i know for a fact we have fox problems and our one's are bigger then you see in the country.

what you have to understand mate is, i don't want to get into this for shooting,i want to get into it purely on the grounds that i would enjoy it and that I'm not stuck in a poxy factory full of foreigners and i have a basic understanding of what it takes to do the job.

i hate being stuck in one place as well.

i am the 1st person to say i need help and teaching, specially with gassing/poison and I'm guessing that's my biggest down fall.

I'm not commenting on any silly replies like the last, when people clearly have not took the time to read the thread and then just decide to jump in boots first and if that's what you call helping some one,you can keep it and you should be ashamed of your self to bring such nonsense to a forum of this standard!

paul mate,i just wish you lived a bit closer so i could get out on a regular basis and learn more as i know that it's nothing to you to pass on knowledge.
