Big Day

Yesterday I organised a small team of guns to help me push through a couple of woods for a fox or two. As half expected we saw nothing apart from a few Roe and some bemused pheasants. Anyway whilst we were doing this there was a constant flight of woodies flighting over my shoot and then dropping onto the neighbours bean fields. There would have been nearly a thousand go past in a couple of hours and they would have offered good shooting as they battled into the wind. As the fox drives had been unproductive I said to a couple of the lads that they were welcome to have a go at the pigeons from our boundary hedge just before they reached teh bean stubbles. They stayed on for an hour to bag about ten for a great many cartridges.

I phoned the neighbour that evening and he allowed us to decoy the stubbles so long as we stayed away from the woods where his game was. So this morning I turned up with a pal, all our gear and 600 shells between us. Half an hour establishing the beast place to be and watching a succession of pigeons come over and onto the fileds. The only draw back was that unlike yesterday, today there was not a breath of wind. Our fears were confirmed when after the first shot the pigeon rose up from all over, well over a thousand, formed one massive swirling super flock and then departed to sit in the woods. Once they had bunched up like that we knew any chance of a big day had dissappeared. After three hours we had four and a rook in the bag and gave up to wait for a good windy day.
