millo2
Hi people, Just wondering what kind of decoys you all use, and the quantity. As a poor student (hears taxpayers grumble), all my gear is hand me downs off my grandfather.I have 4 full bodied decoys, 6 shells, and then 10 shell-like decoys which my grandad made when he was in his 20's out of drainpipe painted to look like a pigeon. I use shortened hacksaw blades to stand the shell decoys on to try and get a bit of movement in the wind, which helps. But do you think I have enough decoys, and decoys of the right quality to be attracting pigeons in. I have only ever had 2-3 days in 5 summers of pigeon shooting where birds were purposefully coming into the decoys. Scott
TX Sniper
it depends on the pattern and the birds. Your deeks that grandad made may be dated though. i have 4 full bodied and 10 hd shell. do intend to get some foam ones though. i also have a magpie one and 3 crow. Paul in North Lincs.
High detailed shells make up the majority of my pattern which have 2 holes in the back allowing the deek to be head down, or head up when pegged. In addition I have a few full bodied for lofting, and always keep half a dozen shot birds in the freezer for the rotary and patterns. I will used anywhere betwween 6 and 30 or more deeks depending on the circumstance. Keep an eye on ebay,... I've had some cracking deals on on deeks, and have ammassed a good sized collection over time, at relitively little cost. Another tip millo, if the missus has a knackered umbrella, cut down the arms to about 7 inches, takes about 5 minutes with a pair of plyers..... just the job for pegging shot birds, shoud you wish to add them to your pattern. They are about 40 years old lol, i just keep touching them up with white paint. Do you reckon they could be contributing to my biggest bag being 21 pigeons? TX Sniper
its hard to say as i dont know the volume of birds, the terrain, your shooting abilities or any of the other factors. i would say that if you notice alot of birds ignoring your deeks or flairing early from them then probably theold ones are messing it up. if it was me id buy some new ones. good luck

Will Beasley
Well that depends on what you're after. Go to our website and check out the deals, got some silly silly prices/deals on at the moment. Or check EBAY as I'm selling a lot of our gear on there. millo2
I'm after something that will attract more pigeons to me lol My decoys don't see to work very well as the majority of them are 40yrs + old. I'm not sure about buying a magnet or a flapper as I have never seen one in action before, and dont know how the birds in my area would respond. Also, any student discounts? eugene molloy
I have 24 shells and that's it. If I need birds for the magnet or flapper I have to shoot them unless I've got some left over from the day before. For the impecunious (that means boracic) there is a cheap way to add a bit of life to shells...... Drill a 1/8 hole at the exact balance point of the deek. To the top of a bit of dowel or stick, securely tape the steel mandrel of a pop rivet, leaving the aluminium insert sticking up. Sharpen the t'other end of the dowel to your preferred length, and there's your decoy peg. Slip the rivet through the hole (yes you gonks, from underneath!). A slight breeze will cause them to bobble and weave about. If it gets too windy and they go berserk, just take them off the peg. To freshen up the white neck bars on a deek, use Tippex, nice and matte. Eug
