Spaniel
HI I have just started getting into Wildfowling and i have joined a local club, so im still a complete novice at this at present. I thought about asking Santa for a Mallard call but i have no idea what to look for as there seem to be so many advertised on the web. Can anyone recommend a good Mallard call and explain the difference between a single and double reed please Thanks
mudpatten
Pretty much any call by Buck Gardner, especially recommended is the "Double Nasty". Reasonably priced and sounds good. Have a look at his web site. There are a number of UK suppliers. Apart from the obvious difference, a single reed is usually louder than a double but, to get the best sound from it, one needs to be fairly proficient at blowing a call. A double reed has less volume, although it is still loud enough, and is much more forgiving if the caller is not technically accomplished. Until you`ve mastered the call of your choice the best place for it is in your pocket. Good luck. Nick.

Guest topshot_2k
have a look for the primos duck call 'feeding mallard' it is plastic call with a bellows type thing attached to it, you can then use it call in duck and make the feeding 'chatter' Cost me £16 from tidepool wildfowling and its spot on, had 16 duck and 2 geese from 4 evenings so far :( clicky Edited December 10, 2008 by topshot_2k

mudpatten
I`ve recently looked through a number of shooting goods catalogues and I`ve noticed that many of them quite wrongly state that a double reed call "sounds like TWO hen mallard." It does`nt. Don`t know where they got that from. A bit of lack of product knowledge there I think. Nick.
Spaniel
Im guessing that the double reed is easier for the novice to use then the single reed ?
mudpatten
Much easier. Its worth saying that a call without the rubber bellows gives you much greater versatility. There are a variety of call notes that you simply can`t do with a "horse c*ck" and most of the calls that come with the rubber bellows are not especially great quality to begin with. ( No disrespect intended to their users.) Nick.
