DaveH
Hi, I've been lurking on here for a while but haven't posted much. I'm looking for a #9 shot 24gm 12g cartridge with a fibre wad to complement the #7 1/2 24gm Blue Diamonds I normally shoot with. I've got hooked on the Blue Diamonds as they seem to work for me but I'd like a similar cartridge with #9 for close in sporting clays and maybe skeet. I find a 24gm load very comfortable for 100 bird sporting and the fibre wads mean my Gold E doesn't need plastic residue scrubbing out after every shoot . From looking around I'd guess my choices are going to the heavier 28gm Blue Diamond or the Express 24gm HV standard fibre. I think I'm going to struggle to find the Express carts locally so I might have to buy in bulk without trying . I guess other options are: Gamebore #8 Super XLR but I'm not sure it's worth dropping a 1/2 size.... Hull Pro Fibre 24gm #9 Any suggestions or comments gratefully received. David BASC
A tough one! To be honest the skill and technology used today to make cartridges is pretty good-so the differences between brands is small not like when I first started shooting! I think the trick is to find what works best for you- as you say the DB works well - maybe this is partly psychological? ie you think they will work well so they do? Shop around and buy a few boxes of each of your 'short list' of 9's - If your local ground has access to a plate get on that with each type to see which patterns best with your gun. Once you have your chosen one - then get on the skeet! David

Thanks David, You're absolutely right that it's psychological.... It won't stop me from looking for what I think is the optimal cartridge for me though ! I'm struggling to find anywhere local that stocks 24gm cartridges and when I do it's always 7 1/2 shot so I was looking for opinions / recommendations before committing to a bulk order. pair away
daveh i have used both the express and the hull loads in 24g and they are both good shells , you should have NO problems with either , also if you want them for close up birds ( sporting ) or skeet you could try 21g loads as they ( hull and express ) both do 21s ( not sure about No 9 shot ) . Catamong
Hi, I think I'm going to struggle to find the Express carts locally so I might have to buy in bulk without trying . Essex Gun stock the full range of Express shells, (according to their website). Cat.
DaveH
Essex Gun stock the full range of Express shells, (according to their website). Cat. Not when I last asked them, they didn't have any 24gm carts IIRC..... I get on well with Alan in there so I was going to ask them if they could order 1 or 2k of whatever shells I decide on. The other option is to pay delivery charges from Justcartridges. Dave
DaveH
I just gave Essex Gun a ring and Neville is getting me 500 of the Express HV Fibres in his next order. Will give them a bash at Dartford when I next shoot skeet . Cheers Dave
