bk
Hi just after some advise. When I got my SGC I decided to get my FAC too as I had one a few years ago and tranferred my LR to my bro when mine expired. His FAC expired too so my BRNO 2E is sat in the RFD at the mo. My FAC has a slot for LR and Hornet but the RFD has offered me a CZ American HMR 16'' for 200 quid plus my really tatty old .22. The amount of shooting I do and finances makes me think the Hornet would be nice to have in case I do some foxing on my brothers farm but not essential at the moment but should I just get my old rimmie back on my licence with its pole like 22 inch barrels or whatever they are and get a hornet too when money allows or part ex it for the hummer and keep my old glass from the .22. The things putting me off getting my LR is its pretty tatty and 200 quid for the hummer seems like a steal as it is new and I have two open slots with the FEO giving me the okay for a one for one variations. The things for the LR is the price of hummer shells, the noise and using my old glass may not be good enough meaning more expense. The LR is a good plinking tool. Any opinions? markbivvy
Will your firearms department grant foxes on the 17 hmr, mine wont. the hornet is just about the smallest caliber they will grant for foxes. but it does do a good job of them. plus it cheap to reload for it, nearly as cheap as hmr ammo is. i have all 3 but now the 17 hmr is gathering dust. hornet and 22lr is my vote. dogfox
over here there is no minimum caliber to shoot vermin with, eg you can shoot as many fox witha .22 as you like, its up to the shooter himself to ensure that the quarry dies quickly, eg: headshots up to 75yds with a .22. my freinds mum had a hornet for about 3 months but traded it in for a .223 as the ammo was just too expensive. SharpShooter14
I don't know alot about the Hornet, but if your stuck between the .22lr and HMR then why not go for the HM2. It's a .22lr from the neck down with the HMR bullet on the end. It's good out to about 125yds and in my opinion is a great rabbiting tool. LeeinVA
The cost of the .22 Hornet rounds is ridiculous and to me the cost does not match the performance of the round.. The .223 or .22-250 is the best choice..
njc110381
If you've got a .22lr and a hornet on your ticket I wouldn't bother with a HMR. The only reason I have one is that I didn't want to try for centrefire when I applied for my FAC and it was a lot flatter shooting and less likely to ricochet than a .22lr. HMR ammo is very expensive for what it is, so if you'd consider reloading your own ammo you could probably produce hornet rounds for around the same cost. You'd get a better calibre that way IMO. If you look at my signature I have a good list of rifles there. My only regret is having a .223 and a HMR. I could easily get by with just a hornet and use my 6.5x55 for bigger stuff. bk
Thanks for the replies. I think I will get the old BRNO on my ticket and look for a cheap Hornet to play with, shame that my ticket doesnt say I can use a mod on the hornet. I dont know about reloading as space is at a premium but when I was in my teens I reloaded 12G so it isnt completely foreign to me.
