Hello people!

This is my first post on here, but not my first ever post as I do run a forum on part of my own website - www.gofishing.co.uk.

Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm from the Peterborough area and have been shooting for over 20 years - mainly clays (skeet, dtl, sporting and recently OSK) and air rifle when I was a kid - plinking, rabbits, hares, roostign pigeons and the likes around local woodland. Used to do a little wildfowling with my dad when I was a kid - local to the Humber and the Wash. Never nailed a duck though! Or a goose! Or anything for that matter on the marsh!

But, wanting another challenge other than clays I set about kitting myself out with all the gear needed to give me a good head start pigeon shooting again. So, after a good 20-year lay-off I'm back with a gusto.

I have just gained access to around 400 acres - typical Fenland arable land - flat, very few hedges and quite windswept.

Shot over it for the first time yesterday. Was very calm, dry, sunny but cold. After searching all the rape fields I eventaually found a huge flock of around 100 pigeons just sat on freshly ploughed soil. So, set up the hide, put the decoys out with a flapper and ended up with 17 in 3 hours. My best shoot yet.

But what I can't get my head around is why they were there on the huge chunks of plough...? They weren't feeding, there weren't any seeds or broken chunks of beet in the soil... nothing!

Has anyone any ideas of why those pigeons were there? The only thing I can think of is simply that the birds were warming their feet in the sunshine - or is that a bit mad?!!!

Can anyone help, please?

Many thanks
