Cosd
Went for a long drive today to a meeting for work. Drove from London to Newark today, 130 odd miles for a one hour meeting  I left at 6.45 to get there for 9:00am as I had to pick someone up on the way. I was looking around to see what the woodies were doing, and for the first time since they've been flocking, I saw many small groups of woodies in 2's, 3's and 4's flying around. In fact I never saw any large groups neither flying or feeding. On the way back, I left at 2.45pm and though I still saw plenty of small groups and pairs flighting, I did see a few large groups feeding and flighting; The largest I'd estimate at 150 - 200 feeding on what looked like rape. Is this just a coincident, or as it is almost time they start breaking up, do they usually split up for the early feed and regroup later in the afternoon? jonboy1
in my experience, when pigeons only have rape to feed on they normally stay in large flocks which is why decoying over rape can be very 'touch n go'. At bout this time of year with all the drilling going they can be spoilt for choice, so the large flocks break up as they move about more checking out the new menu, which is probably what you noticed on your journey , all the better for us! Cheers jon
Shooting Tom
Around where i live, they are in groups of like a couple of 1000. still over rape field in the afternoon they seem to break up into groups of 100-200. They have just started on the clover now.

Richardinhoxne
In our area, birds are mostly in really tight flocks on rape. Lots of activity in morninig around fields close to local woods and large flocks parked up in woods in the afternoon. I thought I'd get into one small wood thats been a good spot for birds coming in late afternoon 15.30 -16.30 - very windy so I thought it might scatter the flock a little. About 500 birds got up and left in a really tight group and that was that. Not a single bird showed. Dog was getting impatient for tea = so was I - next time.....
