i'll be buying one of these shortly tried for a few second hand ones on here but just missed out, so the question is which do you prefer and why. also could somebody explain to me if its not pump action how does the cartridge cycle??. This might sound daft but i've no experiance with semi auto so any tips would be appreciated.

Basically look at a pump action, where the action cycles by your arm, with a semi auto this is performed by the gases and recoil produced from firing a shotgun cartridge.

Also semi auto all the way out of the two, purely for the reason that when clay shooting and pigeon shooting pumping a shotgun for a quick second shot can be slow.

i've read some threads that suggest some semi autos dont cycle the cartridges to well is this a cleaning issue or a problem with cheaper cartridges, or something else??.

Semi-autos need to be kept clean or more specific-the gas ports inside barrel. They vent off a small amount of gas from fired cartridge and can get clogged, but just get in the habit of poking a bit of wire through when cleaning does the trick. My Escort isnt cartridge fussy, but i do use 67mm minimum and make a habit of cleaning it everytime i get back with it.

I have both a pump action Mossberg and a s/a Escort and both perform faultlessly.

The benifit with the Mossberg is it has a 10 year warranty and is so simple to strip and clean, plus a lot more fun to use, especially for skeet.

If you are not too up on stripping semi-auto shotguns, you may wish to stay away from a semi-auto as the gas from the cartridge used to cycle the rounds means you will need you to perform regular cleaning to keep the shotgun performing well. A pump action will cycle anything you throw at it, whereas a semi-auto may struggle to cycle certain cartridges like 21g ones as there is not enough of a bang to force the action to complete it's cycle.

Ive got both a mossberg pump and a beretta semi. My semi has no problem cycling everything from small 24g cartridges, upto bigger 3inch shells. Ive only ever had a couple of occasions where it hasnt cycled properly. I tend to stip it and give the piston etc.. a good clean once a year. At one stage I was doing 250 cartridges through it every weekend.

Im not sure how the escorts compare, I have heard that some dont cycle as well with the smaller cartridges, but to be honest, your not likely to be using anything under 28g. For the cash, i think you cant go wrong, and i myself was considering buying an escort semi just to knock about in the field with rather than use my beretta.

The thing I love about the semi is the lack of recoil, it makes shooting it so much more enjoyable. Especially when you want to mount it quick to shoot a clay or pigeon, you can concentrate more on the bird rather than worrying about your mount & the recoil.

As someone else said, with a semi you can fire the shots literally as quick as you can pull the trigger, wereas with a pump the pumping action delays things, and can move the gun from where you are aiming - so you have to re-aim it again.
