dpile1
My wife wants to put our Collie x Labrador x Springer bitch to a male Chocolate Labrador when she's in season next. Anyone got one in the North Devon area that we could 'borrow'?

phez
My wife wants to put our Collie x Labrador x Springer bitch to a male Chocolate Labrador when she's in season next. Anyone got one in the North Devon area that we could 'borrow'? WHY put a lab into a mongrel with not even checking if the dog has had its hips eyes tested or even why in the first place this is just another person breeding and not thinking about it for christ sake i wish people would think before breeding not just because your wife fancies it
Bryn
Got to agree with Phez, WHY?
tom_0787
i think its worth noting that i would never let my dog mate with just any bitch. Whilst i know my dogs hips are good and his eyes are clear i would need to be confident that the bitch has no problems. I dont think that theres any reason to get on the op's case cos he wants to breed his mongrel, some of the nicest dogs i have ever come accros have been of the heinz 57 variety. That said as a lab owner i understand my responsibility to berrd responsibly.
WGD
That said as a lab owner i understand my responsibility to berrd responsibly. Breeding responsibly does not IMO include the production of a mongrel litter, unless of course all the pups are spoken for already??? Why breed from this bitch? What shining characteristics does she have that make breeding from her a sensible prospect?

Ozzy Fudd
sometimes breeding mongrels can be a good thing, they have a more stable bloodline and less genetic ailments than pure pedigrees, believe me
fallarben
i believe a first cross can be ok but man the bitch in question already has 3 different breeds in it then to go to a different bred again is shawly just breeding hienz 57 mongrels
Ozzy Fudd
yes and no; sometimes the more breeds the better, look at all the problems pedigree dogs have; plus the fact the bitch has all hunting/sporting breeds in her is different than if she was an alsatian/lurcher/st bernard cross
WGD
i believe a first cross can be ok but man the bitch in question already has 3 different breeds in it then to go to a different bred again is shawly just breeding hienz 57 mongrels I agree. The bitch may have "hunting/sporting" breeds in her but within each breed there are dogs with different characteristics, never mind the characteristics of various breeds. Far more likley to end up with a hotch potch dog that you don't know what to do with. Pedigree dogs have problems because of irresponsible breeding from constrained gene pools, something I don't advocate either. Health tests and responsible breeding are the answer, not throwing a few hounds together in the hope that the problems are eradicated.
