terry b
hello all at pw need a bit of advice on decoy patterns, when described as a horseshoe pattern does this mean all facing similar to a arrow shape or the other way round

MerseaDavid
When setting up a horseshoe / U shaped pattern it is all down to the wind direction and on what crop you are shooting. If the wind is in your back and you are shooting over a freshly drilled field the decoys dont need to be too close together and all point them in different direction not always facing the wind. the gap at the open end of the U shape should have about a 25 - 30 yard gap between each side to allow birds into the killing zone. and you should have a 2 - 3 feet gap between the decoys because on drilled fields the seed is well spread out and the birds are having to look round for it. On oilseed rape shooting over winter the decoys need to be alot closer together and the more decoys you have the better and again dont point every bird head into wind. You dont always need to use a U shape pattern, you should do like I do and watch birds feeding on the fields and see how they sit together and try to create this when you set your pattern up. Good luck mate.
