groach1234 Posted April 17, 2009 Report Share Posted April 17, 2009 (edited) Okay thanks loads for all the help on the previous thread and i have decided in am going for my FAC, have brought my parents round to the idea and have started to fill in the forms and am planning who to get for my referees. I am also going to go for the .17 hmr and .243 and i am getting a letter from someone i took a dear stalking course from a few weeks ago to put in with my aplication Just need some help on a few small matters :blink: 1. How much ammunition should i ask for? i was thinking 350 hold for the .17 hmr 200 to buy is this too much? and for the .243 200 to hold 100 to buy once again too much? 2. On the Land front i reckon i can get approximately 500 acres to shoot over is it worth putting it all down on the form? 3. I will need to be getting a new gun cabinet as i will no longer be able to share with my dad. Do you need a extra deep rifle cabinet or do shotgun cabinets work with the depth? at 16 and still in full time education and as im paying im trying to minimise my costs and the rifle cabinets cost more i was thinking a second hand shotgun cabinet. CZ550Kevlar Posted April 18, 2009 Report Share Posted April 18, 2009 (edited) 1- Each force has their reccomended limits on .17hmr, Kent gave me 1200 hold, 1000 to buy (On initial grant). I would either phone the firearms department and ask for guidance or put 500 buy 600 hold especially if you aren`t local to a RFD. you can always haggle with your FEO. 2- Put it all down, some may already be on the register, if it isn`t then it will need to be checked then passed for the calibers you want, if you want to speed the process up only put down the land you know is already checked for each caliber then get the extra checked after you get your licence. 3- Shotgun cabinet is fine, if you are using low or medium mounts then you will be fine for those small rifles, it`s only when you get up in caliber they don`t fit, also if you are keeping rifles seperatly you can store them at an angle but a 3 gun shotgun will take 3 rifles fitted with scopes. I can fit my 10/22 Target, .17hmr style, escort semi and an o/u in a 3 gun shotgun cabinet, plus the scopes of course. Billy. Posted April 19, 2009 Report Share Posted April 19, 2009 My bullets are as follows: .17HMR - 500 buy, 1000, own .22LR - 500 buy, 1000, own 22-250 - 50 buy, 100 own. .270WIN - 60 buy, 100 own. Make sure you put own all your land, as you never know, your current land that you're putting down might not be signed off for a calibre. The more the merrier. I'd put down for a .22LR as well. They're the 'old faithful' and you might quite like to have it for stealth reasons. As the 17 has got a bit of a crack to it. Don't forget to put down for sound moderators for each gun. It is open flat land and as it has been in the family for maybe 20-40 years depending on which part i doubt the approved caliber will be set. Does that mean i will have to take the FEO to every field i want shooting rights over to get the approved caliber? the fields are reasonably close (probably 4-5 km by road) but it could still take some time? Thanks George I seriously think you've undercut yourself and it's clear you made the same mistake I did on the centrefire rounds. CF rounds come in boxes of 20, so 50 buy is a bit pointless, scribble it out and change it to 60. 150 22lr rounds will go in the blink of an eye. I used 50 just farting about earlier, so get at least 500 buy, as the bricks of 500 will work out cheaper in the long run. Strangely enough though... You've asked for more .17 rounds than .22lr :blink: . Are you aware how much a box of 50 .17 rounds are?! (between 10-15 quid, dependant on where you go) Seriously, scribble them all out and change the rimmys to at least 500 buy and whatever you want to hold. (I have 1000 hold.) Likewise, change the centrefire ammo to 60 buy. If you're worried about scribbling them out, don't worry. I did it right under my FEOs nose as he told me it's be fine to apply for the same amount of .17 ammo as I do .22lr. Back to your other question: If he land's not cleared, it could take from a week, to several months to get it approved. If it's flat, with very few backstops, you're going to struggle, especially if there's a nearby road. The FEO will inspect all the land and it's best you try to use this to point out good, safe shooting spots, as this will show you're a competent marksman. My mate got his land cleared for .223 and from a glance, you'd be worried about shooting an air rifle on it; it's all just how you sell it. Andy H Posted April 19, 2009 Report Share Posted April 19, 2009 Go for 22lr hold 1100 buy 1000 17 hmr hold 550 buy 500 243 hold 300 buy 250 You will be amazed how fast you use your allowance up if you only go for a low initial ammo hold limit , A quick setup and zeroing session trying all the variations of ammunition types will eat most of your allowance up :ie 22 lr to try and find what works in our rifle remember you can only buy them in boxes of 50 or 100 if you try CCI ,And if you try std velocity and subsonics you will use 100 of your limit on just ELEY or 200 on CCI.
