CZ HMR Barrel Floating

Noticed the groups on my hmr getting gradually worse, so decided to float the barrel. On inspection, the forend of the stock was really tight against the barrel.

Took ages to sand down the wood in the barrel channel, but now the wood isn't touching the barrel.

Problem is, the stock, despite being wood is flexing when I use the bipod off the bonnet and under these circumstances, the wood and barrel touch. So:

a. is there something wrong with the stock

b. do I need to remove more of the wood from the barrel channel so that even with the flex, the barrel/wood don;t touch.

What annoys me most is its a left handed stock, and I would rather just have a synthetic, but nobody seems to do a left handed synthetic stock for the CZ HMR, or any left handed hmr for that matter; unless anyone knows different.

cheers

I have a true left-handed CZ .17 HMR. Anschutz, Savage and Cooper are the only other manufacturers to produce an L/H .17 HMR.

I sanded out the barrel channel on mine and resealed it, making sure that I got about 2mm clearance between wood and steel when supported by the bipod. I am no expert on stock-work, but you may be able to sand out a deeper channel and add a layer of acraglass (or other resin reinforcement) to minimise the flex.

If groups are gradually declining, it may be your cleaning regime that needs a re-think.

Ok, cheers, will take a bit more out. Did anyone else find that it took ages to sand?

As to cleaning, have just hoppes borefoamed the barrel and then ran a bore snake throughit. Will be seeing if these two things help improve things. Will put a few rounds down it this weekend as see if the groups come down as i fire a few rounds down the newly cleaned barrel.

cheers

p.s. I take it none of the left hand manufacturers have a synthetic option?

Go to a builders merchant and buy some really coarse aluminium oxide paper. It comes on a roll and you can buy it for @ £1 a metre.

Wrap it around a bar of the correct diameter and sand away until the bar fits the channel.

If you have just borefoamed it you can expect your grouping to be all over the place for 30-50 shot's

Mine shoot's like a blind man on a galloping horse is pulling the trigger after cleaning

Well, eventually got out to test the hmr since floating the barrel.

After a quick 35yd zero, I took 4 rabbits for 5 shots including a nice 130 yder. Along with the barrel floating and a change back to Remmington ammo from Winchester, my confidence is high once again with this gun.

Now looking forward to the rest of my 800 acres to have the grass and crops cut. I forsee this gun getting well used over the next month or so!!
