Red Handed

While I have been away for a couple of weeks a vixen has moved a litter onto the farm I shoot. My brother found the den in a badger set so the cubs are pretty much untouchable, over 20 dead pheasants, four dead rabbits and a colection of mice and voles were lying outside the holes. He shot this dog fox last evening coming from our main wood to the den, he was caught pretty much red handed handed with two pheasant chicks plus the baby rabbit. Got to give them credit, they are some killing machines....

I used to have a smallholding near Calne in Wiltshire, and we kept chickens and ducks as well as growing veg and rearing pigs. One morning when going up the field to feed the animals there was a noticable lack of sound - the chickens always used to run down the pen when they heard me coming, knowing that I'd be feeding them. As I continued up the field I started noticing the carcasses... All 2dozen chickens, and all but 3 of the 18 ducks (the survivors were in the middle of the pond and would not come off it) were killed. As I stood there in the middle of the carnage, I spotted the fox coming back to pick up his next load... If I'd had a foxing permission then, that would have been his last kill - as it was, I only had a sub-12ft/lb air rifle so could only fume...

Good luck getting the rest of the family...
