magnetandsteel
Hi all I am in the process of training my first cocker. He just over six months now and things coming along nicely. The one thing I need help with is his retrieving. On an open field or the garden he is fine retrieves no problem to hand. When I throw dummies balls or whatever into trash, he will find but then ignore the dummy and carry on. Is it his youthfullness do I just leave him or does it need correcting now. Any help would be most appreciated like I said he is fine on open ground with no distractions. Cheers in advance Dai
new to the flock
I would say too big of a step....if I am reading you correctly......instead of going from open field into trash, try going from open field into 6 inches of grass, then 12 inches of grass, then light cover and so on. This will allow the dog to build his confidence, and to get use to the covers aswell. At present the cover is far more interesting then the retrieve. butcherboy
I don't start training my cockers till around 10mths. Before that all play retrieves are done in the garden & only 1 or 2 a WEEK. Take your time & don't bore the pup to death.
magnetandsteel
Cheers for replies, I don't over do it with retrieves it's only one or two a day as were out walking or in back garden. Dai
