How far from the hide do i put the deeks? 2. How many deeks should i use? 3. How do i find a flightline? 4. Whats the best pattern to put them in? Thanks in advance for the help and sorry if teh questions seem a bit stupid. Y.I.S Jordan

aubs
Hi jordan, I usually put the nearest decoy about 25 yards out from the hide and make your pattern from there. A dozen or so decoy's and a magnet seem to suit me but it's all about the conditions and what your shooting over , one thing I do is replace decoy's with shot birds when I can (you can't beat the real thing). You have to look to see where the birds are entering and leaving or crossing a field mostly the birds will follow the same route using trees and hedge lines as markers. Go to ukshootwharehouse web site ,on the left hand menu scroll down to the bottom and you'll find some good setups there, make sure you note the wind direction. Just to add these notes are only rough guidance and some members may disagree with this advice but I don't know everything, I just hope it may help a little. Good luck. old rooster
It's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string really mate. You learn a lot of it with time but to be honest the best way to start out is to buy a decent book, read and consider it. The late Archie Coates has to be worth reading, Batley has a good book on the topic amongst others. If you are stuck for cash I'll lend you my copy if you promise to send it back when you've read it. I couldn't put myself in the "professional" category but I've been at it a few years now, you get to the point where you can tell if it's worth setting up or not, even when it looks as though there are thousands of birds just begging to be shot. Wind direction relative to where you put your hide will require a range of decoy patterns, sometimes it's worth going with a gut reaction and set up something that you wouldn't always try.
