njc110381
For air rifle ranges Bushnell do some good scopes at around that price. I suggest a fixed mag at around about 6x will be plenty for an air rifle, you will get more optics for your money in the fixed mag scopes and you don't need any more zoom to shoot at 40 yards. I'll have a look around and see if I can spot anything used that could be good for you. Sometimes you can pick up a fixed mag Leopold or similar for that money, which will be another step up from your mates scope!
Milligan
I would recommend spending a little more and getting a Bushnell Legend, 5-15x40. Seriously good for the money, of course you'll need mounts as well. Might pick one up for less secondhand on the BBS forum.
njc110381
Do you really need 15x zoom on an airgun though? I used to find my Bushnell elite 5-15x50 was good and clear to 300 yards and more, which done the job for my .223!

I have one on my HW100 and often use it out to 15 mag for target, HFT and hunting, I found that a fixed PA scope just didn't cut it. Also keep in mind a Bushnell elite carries a considerably higher price than a legend. If you have a look aroud at a range you'll find the majority of airgunners use fairly high mag scopes. If the gun is accurate enough to consistently group 5 shots in a 5p piece at 30yds then it's worth being able to see a 5p coin.
pbickerd
Another vote for Bushnell. I have a Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 and I am really impressed with the quality for the price.
