Toombsy
Evening all, Just returned from a couple of hours with the rimfire, helping to keep the rabbit population down a little alongside a rape field that they have been hammering . It wasn't the most productive session, but a few nice sights that beats watching the telly. The warren here is along a public footpath. Hardly the ideal place to be let loose with a rimfire, but it's easy to see when dog walkers are approaching. I laid up with the wind blowing towards me, in the long grass, 70 yards away from the nearside edge of the warren and rolled a couple of ciggies and waited. It wasn't long before the first leveret popped out but it was well out of range. Ten minutes later an adult showed and, as per usual, hopped into the middle of the track, stopped for a split second to check things, and quickly ran into the rape - far too quick for a clean shot. A little rustle in the rape a few yards in front of me and a cock pheasant walked out and across the track.... then a little later, about 20ft away, a hare came bounding out the rape too and stopped on the track, then ran into the barley in the next field. That was followed by a fox - a vixen I think - the first I've seen on my permission. It was around 40 yards away, having a good sniff of the footpath and the rabbit tracks. I lifted the rifle... but I didn't even consider shooting her, but I'm pretty sure a well-placed .22 hollow round would have had her down. But, no-one in this area's complained of fox problems, so it was nice to admire her for a while at x10 mag. Eventually, a rabbit did show, and stopped long enough for today's shot to hit home and provide a quality casserole for the weekend Here's a few pics, over the next couple of posts... Toombsy
WHERE THE RABBITS ARE DOING ALL THE DAMAGE. It's easy to see anyone approaching, which is a bonus Edited June 9, 2009 by Toombsy

Bleeh
That was a bit anti-climatic... one less rabbit in the world, anyhow. the first leveret popped out but it was well out of range. Ten minutes later an adult showed and, as per usual, hopped into the middle of the track, stopped for a split second to check things, and quickly ran into the rape - far too quick for a clean shot. - I'm hoping you are using the word leveret in the meaning of a young rabbit. - If this is so you might be mistaken as I have only ever heard it in the context of hares. If, on the other hand you where shooting hares - that's another matter all together. Edited June 9, 2009 by Bleeh

Toombsy
That was a bit anti-climatic... It always is there mate - best I've ever had is two in a session from that warren... it's awkward to get decent sport when there's people using the track so often.
