baikiel boy
HI All,ramshorn handled stick , cowshorn ferrule, small copper spacer .Made in traditional way (no threaded steel bar) painted with acrylic paints, then painted over with an iridescent wash and an acrylic varnish which I don't think is good enough to protect paintwork. Looking for a good clear hard varnish or lacquer. F.M. has made his suggestions anyone any other suggestions. Regards baikiel boy.
Fisherman Mike
Well done mate thats a really nice piece of work. I would be a bit wary of the strength of the joint though. Its nice to use the traditional ferrule method but a dowel either steel bar or bone which I sometimes use is much the stronger. If you build up the head with several layers of thin Polyurethane and then smooth it with 00 grade wire wool and then wax polish it. it will come up beautiful, with a real depth to the lacquer. FM PS if you want a rock hard finish get some two part epoxy lacquer from the local decorators merchants or craft shop. PPS You might also get it from a tackle shop or they can get it for you. A company called Gudebrod used to make a very good one
baikiel boy
HI FM , Went to Wales to see Daffyd Davies to buy the ramshorn he showed me the traditional joint , reckoned it to be the best , also if using a steel bar it would prove a bit more difficult to repair if it broke? I ve used steel bars previously on the stag antler and on the buffalo horn . I chiseled the feathering in so i ll only coat that area with ? The rest I may take your suggestions on board .Thanks very much for info will let you know how I finally finish it off .What do you think of the iridescent colouring ? Regards bb
Fisherman Mike
What do you think of the iridescent colouring ? Very good, I would be proud myself of such a stick. Daffyd davies has done some incredible work, I take it he showed you some of his sticks. I have a very good Book bought from Coch Y Bondu books which covers all aspects of stickmaking... its surplus to requirements if you would like it let me have your address by Pm and I will post it to you. Ill have a look tonight to see what its called incase you have it already. Cheers. Mike.
baikiel boy
HI F.M. , Yes Daffyd is some craftsman , i thought the trout he showed me had just come out of the brook , magnificent !! I shall visit him again to get some more horn and also some advice on how he does it. I've already bulked up a horn and made a template for doing a trout , finish is everything on the horn i think . Thanks for the offer of book , i have two , "The art of crookmaking " by Peter Elder Leo Gowan's "The craft of stickmaking" . I shall send you a PM .
