when trapping moles........

Recommended Posts

Right, so i managed to get hold of 5 tunnel traps and put them in this morning. Once (if) the moles are caught, do you have a use for the skins??? would take a lot to make moleskin pants. hahaha

I didnt want to take any pics today, as i would have looked a bit odd taking pics of a hole in the floor. Going to check in the morning and will take a bucket and camera then.

hang em on a barbed wire fence to show of you prowess like the old keepers used to do.they might be usefull for fly tying though.

Yep,fly tying or you could make a dandy tobacco pouch out of one. You can choose which end you leave open.

are you serious about a smoke pouch? :good:

No.only jesting really.Guess with shrinkage after the curing it would be too small for anything but a pip full. Then again I got a big bull one last February that could fit the bill if I hadnt stuck him on the fence. Good 8 incher.Might have made a willy warmer for the smaller of us perhaps.

well, when i got there, the mole traps were bare. never mind. that was yesterday morning, and a couple of them had been tripped. I reset them and have left them till tommorow. Im sure after 2 nights, i might do better. :good:

Good luck. I move them if not had a catch after a day or so. There are some pro trappers come on PW who will know best though. I think one kill per 4 traps set is average. I think its a great way to be usefull on the farm. I think I will never even hardly dent the crow numbers but have eradicated all moles on 150 acres.Until the winter comes that is.

Thats the thing Vole, i want to appear usefull. Id rather him see me have a go than 'cant be *****'. Most farmers are busy people and dont have time to chit chat, so its a good way of getting 5 mins out of him. :good:

Stick at it and you will get them. You only need to see it once and off you go. I learnt off Jack Hargreaves Out of Town on ITV and I never forgot. I use scissor traps by the way so if tunnel ones not suit then why not try them? You dont have to dig up as much soil to set them either and i think they can be set quicker. I have 6 traps in a bag on the farm with a trowel and screwdriver to find the runs and I move it from spot to spot where I need to set them. Couple of traps per cluster or more for a big bunch of molehills where ther can be 3/4 running riot. Take it bit by bit and you will do it.

Like you,I see the farmer is a busy man. The last time I saw him though him he said "good job" and that really made up for the efforts to keep his farm tidy.

we've got moles and rabbits on the cricket pitch a play at.

i've had a chat with the keeper and chairman and although they don't want to upset the neighbours with shooting, they are happy for me to trap the rabbits and moles.

Moles are something I haven't dealt with before. and i don't want to be digging up loads of cricket pitch to put traps down. Is there a guide to mole trapping anywhere?
