Chokes? Why did I bother.

I shoot with a 19 year old whipper snapper with all the answers who in fact shoots like a King should. When I go out with him the banter is rich, probably due to the 35 year age difference, but I do enjoy it and look forward to shooting with him, lovely lad, no I 'aint gay.

He uses a semi with full choke and is on the money every time. My semi has modified so I only wing the long shots, involving the long walk, putting the incoming off and generally putting him in the same ball park as his demons while I go and pick up.

So after a good ruck, I agreed to put the full choke in my semi, not a problem as my O/U has Half and Full so when I use this, he has to eat dirt as I have the long shots dead in the air like he does, with his semi.

Now I was quite happy with Modified in my semi as I usually shoot over my decoys, but no, not him, if it looks in range he takes the shot and I have not seen him miss yet, *******. Yes, he is that good. He had a while with Sam Grice, some of you East Anglians may know that name, well it worked for Ryan, that's his name. Suffice to say, after all the ribbing, I had to change the bloooming choke.

Now you probably may know that I have one of those Datsuns, top gun too, and no, I am not on commission. Well I was in the process of removing the modified choke when this "removing seized chokes" post came on PW. Now chokes 'aint my bag and I believe that what the gun comes with, is good enough. Not so with the Datsun, you have a choice, oh gawd. I probably clean it annually, so removing the choke was a pig. I tried all the tips to no avail. It was in soak for a week, in diesel, when the post came on line.

I tried the butane gas, tapping tapping tapping, that tool that expands in the bore, the whole works. Ended up with the tiny cold chisel, with lots of valuable time time time. Got it out in the end, now looking forward to using it, but hey, will the tip of the barrel blow off, after a few shots? Any metallurgists advise me on this one, the hot cold hot cold metal thing. I dipped it in oil to cool it, found it kept the color. The barrel does look a bit like a Banana now after all that vice work.

Scored the barrel a bit too, in the vice, but this I think, just adds to it's history.

Fabb gun, how can anyone question it's gaining popularity in the shooting world? How much is a new barrel?

So this is a Hatsan Escort then?

Never heard of a Datsun before.. but people refer to the Hatsan Escort with all sorts of names :good:

They surely do call it all sorts of names and this is a term of endearment we use because we feel it is as reliable as a Datsun, though with the build quality of a Ford Escort.

  • 2 weeks later...

i dont think the end will fall off ,unless you really bast**d*** it.

the whole gun does cost much, so the barrel will be cheap.

Go to, or phone Simpsons in Newmarket or the gun shop in Sawton and get a price . got to be cheap.

i doubt it will be a danger to use tho.

You could always ask a gun smith, to be on the safe side.

I never use full choke ,ever!

cheers scott
