Boromir
Took my Labrador to the moors today and he has finally got the idea of I need to sniff out the grouse. We went on the first drive he went ahead of me as usual but wasnt getting interested in the grouse just the Hares that he see's fleeing off. In the middle of the drive the guy to my right his dogs managed to get a young mountain Hare and killed it but the dog left it and carried on so got my dog to go and retrieve it in which he did. Then it was the end of the drive and one of the underkeepers told me to use the dogs to get some birds that were shot, I told him that I will be lucky if he even takes an interest in looking for them, I tried but he wasnt going to look or sniff them out. The second drive was more the same as the first but without getting anything at all. At the end of the third drive when I was put next in line to the same underkeeper on the first drive was when things really changed got told by the underkeeper to let my dog search for some birds again I was about to say that he wont but as I said this he came running up to me with a grouse in his mouth, gave it straight to me. From then on something must of clicked in his head cause on the last drive he was out not looking for the hares but the grouse, he was actually finding the ones that were hiding in the heather and not moving sending them in the right direction as well. Then it gets better when the last drive ended he found three, I know thats sounds not alot but for a novice that was pretty dam good, two of which was runners. The Underkeeper that told me to use the dog told me that he did excellent and that he now knows what to look out for so can only get better. It is one of those moments when you see that the time and effort you have put in has paid off, just so relieved to have a dog that I trained myself do this, he is my first dog and got told that you always mess up on your first dog, I know he's not the best but he is going to be a good'un. He is now lying in his bed all worn out and asleep. So to those that have dogs that are not so good at flushing and picking up have faith in your dog s/he could well surprise you one day. Cannot wait till next Saturday.
