garyb
Ok.. So i'm pretty happy with my handloads at the moment... I'm currently using Norma brass (as per my previous thread).... Not long ago I was given 50 odd once fired Lapua Match cases in .223. I loaded up 3 or 4 of these with my usual recipe of 26.5grn of Varget for a test. Problem is, I noted that the case volume of the lapua seemed quite a bit less than that of the Norma... and the powder was quite a bit closer to the base of the bullet Should I be worried? I didn't hear any nasty crunches when using the seating die... Someone told me that there's almost, an un written rule when using lapua brass - in regards to dropping the powder charge down a little - can someone confirm? I've not fired any yet.... AndyCM
http://www.6mmbr.com/223Rem.html this lists different case capacity for various manufacturers (but not Norma) - which I would say shows a good reason to back off the load when swapping cases you can then work up again

macca
Hi, measure the case capacities of the norma and lapua brass. Clean a fired case of each brand - leave the spent primer in. Weigh and record the mass of each case. Fill each cas with water to the top of the neck. Record. Subtract dry weight of case from water filled case weight. Compare for the two brands of brass. This gives you a reasonable measure of the differences in case capacity. I f the norma brass was near maximum load and the lapua brass holds a lot less water then you would probably need to reduce the powder charge in the lapua brass to avoid pressure problems. monkeymagic1969
Gary - yes you are correct in thinking you put less powder in a Lapua case ( one of the many reasons for using them) I used to use 25.5grn of varget, a 50grn bullet and CCI BR4 primers - very very accurate load in my Tikka T3 Edited August 28, 2009 by monkeymagic1969
