mikee
just down the road from home is a 100 odd acre field that was peas a few weeks ago that didnt get harvested on time so was cut for seed in the end, it has been blue with pigeons for several weeks but its on land i cant shoot and the keeper wont let anyone shoot it at all, i can shoot a field on the other side of the main road and with yesterdays strong wind I had a feeling the birds would cross it to get to the pea field, i went and looked a couple of times in the morning and at about 1.30 a flight line appeared over the far corner, i dragged all my gear across to the other side and built a hide under an oak tree, set the 12 new silosock jacketed deeks out and before i could get into the hide birds started coming off the flight line, after about an hour i had shot a dozen or so which i set up with the silosocks and just as i got back in the hide the farmer turned up in a huge Claas tracked tractor with a drill on the back, he filled it up with seed and started to drill the field, he started my end so i thought my day was finished, he stopped by my hide and said he'd do my end first so could i move my coys out of his way each time he came up the field and then he'd go to the other end out of my way, so for about 1/2 an hour each time he got near i ran out of the hide picked up the coys in his way and replaced them when he'd gone round and back down the field, with such a huge machine he was done near me in no time and went down the other end, the pigeons didnt seem to mind the tractor and kept coming and as the wind got stronger they seemed to come better, the old oak tre was creeking and cracking so i moved my hide about 10yds further down the ditch and about 1/2 an hour later a big branch fell right where my hide had been, which would have been very nasty, the birds came well until 5.30 and then stopped like someone had turned a tap off, i picked up 61 and lost 4 in a thick blackthorn hedge, i cleared up and got home by 7.00 when my mate came round to go rabbiting, so it's pigeons and shotty out of the truck and rifle in and off we go to the first farm, a new permission ive not shot before, after a quick drive round we left with 8 nice clean bunnys and head for the next farm which is a free range egg unit, about 150 acres of grass fields with a 10m road all round each field with thick hedges and 3 arable fields, we did a couple of laps of each field and picked up another 23 rabbits, we saw 2 foxes but only had the .22 with winny subs so left them alone, i knew i should ahve put the .243 in aswell, I got home about 10pm absolutely knackered, but a good day anyway mikee
