To chew or nor......

I have posted this on two FACEBOOK Dog forums but wanted to get a as much feedback from people who work dogs.....

I have had BLUE an ESS that is 2 in June since Oct 2014 and not once have we had any "chewing" incidents in the home. I then introduce him to some hide chews two weeks ago as he had some bad tarter build-up and since then we have had two incidents where he has chewed furniture and rugs. Now he knows he has done bad as when I get home he runs up to me all happy until I point to the chewed areas and he skulks away head low and very submissive so he knows he has done bad. Now on both occasions he has been for a long walk in the morning and had a chew when I leave for work. His cage is open and he gets the chew in the cage but can leave it when he wants. He also has two deer antlers he kind of chews but not much and a nylon bone which he ignores. When I got home at lunchtime the damage has been done - one wicker chair leg and the grabber from a hall rug. I tell him off, take him for a walk and the he is back in his cage for the afternoon until I get home again.

I want him to chew the right thing to reduce the tarter but only the right thing. What would you do?

I doubt the two are connected myself , the issue is you are not there to tick him off when he is in the act , I very much doubt he understands exactly what you are telling off for by you pointing to what he has chewed , he is more likely just reacting to your change of demeanor .

I am afraid this is one of the issues of keeping a dog in the house instead of a kennel and run when you cannot be home all the time.

You gave him things/items to chew while you were away, therefore he now thinks other stuff is 'fair game'

Also boredom while you are away is another factor, nothing to do or anyone to interact with.

Some dogs may be ok left for a few hours, others it takes time to build up

One of mine was a rescue and he would not leave my side for nearly a year. 5 years later he is fine up to 3-4 hours. Never chewed anything or been destructive.

He cowers when you arrive home as he does not know if he will be told off or not. It has nothing to do with him chewing stuff, he's totally unaware- its you that thinks that (even if it is a chair leg)

When your in take all his chewing stuff away and only give him one when you interact with him, then take it away when you have finished.

Perhaps you could put a video camera or similar up to actually see what he does, then you may be able to take measures to avoid this type of thing in the future.

my 2yr old lab chewed his way through plenty of dog beds in the house through the night but that's stopped now (touch wood); I used a spray from pets at home (was about £5) back in December (just on his bed) and it stopped it immediately. Dogs only in the boot room and doesn't get in the house. Might be worth crating him at night or when your not there and using a spray on his bedding to start with and see how that go`s? Hes housed in the kennel/run during the day and used to chew the plyboard linings but has sinced stopped that too and Ive no sprayed anything out there.

Issue sorted...... he only gets chews when I am there and he takes them to his cage on his own without me saying anything. No more chewed carpets or bits. I think as someone stated, he had a chew and was getting a lot from it and so wanted to continue that enjoyment.....

He now stays out of his cage all day but 99% of the time when I get home he is in his cage with the cat close by.....
