Browning BLR

Hey guys. Now I've got a slot for a .300 Win Mag I've been looking at rifles that could be good for my intended use (Bear, Boar and big Deer). I was intending to go for a heavy barrel rifle so I could target shoot with it too, but in all fairness I'm unlikely to ever get into serious targets anyway. I've spotted the Browning BLR in a magazine I was reading - it's a lever action like the old Winchester but with a 3 round box magazine instead of a tube and front locking bolt like an AR15 (so strong). It looks great, and at 7lb 12oz unscoped is no lightweight. It could be just what I'm looking for. It even takes apart so you can fit it in a 24" case for flying etc! Do you think the 24" barrel would be long enough to get a good amount of power from the cartridge?

Has anyone ever shot one? What's the accuracy like? Build quality ok? Is the action reliable? I haven't seen one before, but it looks handy.

Yes, I have shot one several times, specifically a 'BLR LW Take Down' in .30-06. It's a friend's rifle, used specifically for driven boar, and it is perfect for that job. Build quality is good, reliability is fair. Trigger was poor. Muzzle flip was quite pronounced. It cycles significantly quicker than a turnbolt, although it is quite easy to short-stroke in the heat of the moment. The accuracy is good, but it does not compare with a turnbolt - that's the trade-off for the take-down facility.

It would serve you well for boar, bear and big deer, but it would not be my first choice unless I was predominantly shooting moving quarry.

If you set any store by it, that fool Pete Moore uses a BLR for boar shooting.

Moore is a Walt, and he never produces any actual criticism of a product, other than 'it's fantastic/indispensable!'. I know as well as any reader that he is at the mercy of the manufacturers and advertisers, but that is only a partial excuse for the derivative rubbish that he churns out.

That's why I asked about the gun on here. In a magazine everything is great. In the real world we all know that's not true don't we. The best gun test I ever read was on a SMK B2. "Very accurate and great value for money" was what it said. Should have read "total **** but you get what you pay for and it's ok for shooting coke tins"!

So....Anyone else used one of these Brownings?

I used one last month whilst hunting in australia. It was a take down .308. I was shooting factory 150 grain ammo and found it quite snappy, the barrel seemed to heat up quickly too opening up groups after only 2-3 shots, but that didn't worry me hunting. I think it would be hard on the shoulder in 300 win mag, but I have only a little experience of that cal.

Fast handling, accurate (in lever action terms) and a detachable box mag... you could do worse!
