  1. Has anyone on here had much experience with Beagles? I've been looking into getting a new pup and quite like the Beagle. As a pet they sound ideal but I'd also like the chance to taker her out with my Jack Russel when I go out with the gun and possibly take her out beating during the season on a small syndicate. But i've heard these follow their noses and can wander off all too easily. Whats everyones views?
  2. I started making a knife this morning using my old one as a template. got the blade itself ok so far but cut to deep making the tang, so its thinner than i planned. the tang is one with will be inserted into a drilled block of wood as a handle. Im worried that it may be too thin and i will have the risk of it weakening the knife. Here is a pic of what i have done so far Any tips to correct it? if you think it may be a weak point of the blade Thanks DanRM
  3. I am selling an Fx Storm .177 air rifle in 'good' condition for my friend. He bought the air rifle last year where he only took it out a few times, since then he has joined the army and hasn't had the time to use it, which is the reason he has asked me to sell it. He said that it fires like a dream, being constant and accurate The air rifle has a pistol grip cocking action allowing you to deliver 8 rounds in about 3 seconds, as well as an ambidextrous synthetic stock. This is the full set up for sale so this includes: Fx Storm .177 air rifle Fx Stirrup pump with correct adapter bi-pod scope (make/optics unknown) 2 x 8 shot magazines Gun Slip. (Edit: After closer inspection of the rifle, it looks like the barrel has been re-sprayed as there small run marks just below the scope which are not visible in photo) The asking price is £450 but offers are welcome PM me for any more details or contact information (post code is HR6) Thanks DanRM
  4. I would say it would be the same for blackberry vodka, if i remember right, when i made some 2 years ago i used 1lb fruit to 1 litre of vodka along with about 250g sugar. Lightly swirl the vodka once a day/two days for a week. Then if needed add small amounts of sugar to taste Hope this helps Dan
  5. sorry mate I've not been much help have I  haha not really, i have thought about talking to the people, but might make myself worse of, as all of them bar one house moved from large cities to retire and enjoy the country, however, from what i have spoken to them they dont enjoy the country pursuits. Thought about getting an air rifle but dont have the cash for a decent one. Dan
  6. As above, in your opinion what time would it be unsociable to use a shotgun at night, in this case there is a small court of 6 houses in the corner of one of the fields on my permission. In the morning I normally wait until 7:30 - 8:00 before I go in that field, but at night i have been stopping around 9:00, which seems too early for the amount of rabbits i just that one field (counted 26 last night - minus 9 tonight  ) Dan

    Flasks

Im looking to invest i a new flask, as my current one does not seem do the job for the amount of hours i work. Has anyone got any recomendations for good flasks on the market at the moment?
  9. Sorry to bring up old posts, but halfway through making my second knife today, i accidentaly broke the tang to about an inch from where the blade starts. After the work i have done to it (grinding the depth of a file down) i dont fancy throwing it and as the blade is already only 3" i cant reduce that into the tang any more. I dont think that it would have the strength to keep it as a fixed blade knife though After looking at a pocket knife i noticed that the tang is quite short, and i thought i might be able to turn it into one that folds, but cant find a way or any info on how to do this Anyone able to help? Cheers Dan
  10. I must say i love a bit of gaming, will also be getting the PS3 next payday (hopefully) bought Call of Duty: Modern Warfare yesterday and could not believe how fast the last 12hours have passed i reckon this will be a cracking game as soon as i get my Live back up and running (also looking out for Assassin's Creed 2) Dan
  11. Hi there, after reading the very recent post "Sloes" i thought of trying to get a little thread going on what has been tried and tested. I had great fun last year collecting Berries to add to some alcohol, and after what i made last year turning out so good, not only am i going to up the quantities but the varieties too. Just looking some ideas on what else i could use this year and the best way too make it. I have some sloe gin from 2 years ago(if harvest is good year i will be making more) Last year i made some Blackberry Vodka which turned out superb used 500g sugar/1Kg berry/1L Dry vodka as well as a Loganberry Vodka using the same recipe as above. Was thinking of making raspberry and Strawberry gin/vodka too Any other recipes that could benefit i and anyone else interested would be greatly appreciated (just remembered the pinned topic of game drinks, but in case anyone says about it im not after mixes just home brews on a whole) Dan
  12. Hi, i have not seen any posts on this yet (dont think its that up market), so i was wandering if anyone had been to it before? Its at Ross-on-wye tomorrow. I live in Hereford and havent been before, i have heard mixed reviews on it. Looked up the website, but holds no information worth going i.e no list of trade stands Anyone ever been? and is it worth the £8 entry and wet clothes? Dan
  13. i have been thinking of doing one of these courses as i find it a great hobby, i have read many books about foraging so i have quite a good understanding on the subject. Just i dont have the confidence to pick a lot of the things i know about. I might look into this a bit more if you recommend it.

  17. im thinking about going for abit of a walk about tomorrow morning after a few rabbits and early pigeons. Last time i walked around there was a flock of pigeons on the ploughing (what was maize cover) but now they have planted it again with maize. I havent had chance to have a look to see what is on it, but do you think its work taking my decoying kit? when i go for the rabbits? Dan
  18. i make a lot of pies and the best pastry recipe i found is as follows... 500g plain flour salt 125g cold butter 125g lard iced water then you... - Sift the flour in a large bowl - cut the butter and lard into large walnut sized pieces and toss them in the flour until coated - then add a little water, bringing the dough together with your fingertips **MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE THE BUTTER AND LARD IN AS BIG CHUNKS AS YOU CAN** On a well floured surface shape the dough into a rectangle which is about 20mm thick, fold the far 3rd towards you, and the closest third back over that. Then rotate 90 degrees then repeat this last step at least 5 times. Place in fridge for 1 hour and repeat the rolling and rotaion 2 more times and then roll out to the required thickness and size. **the reason for the chunks of fat is that it will stop the pastry going soggy when it cooks - allowing as much gravy/liquid as you want in your pie** and i highly recommend this recipe for anything needing rough puff pastry Dan

  22. Yes you can cook it with the membrane, im not sure how it goes after being in salt water but i can never get all the membrane off. The more you skin rabbits the better you will get in comparison to how much is left on the meat, you just have to work it away along with the skin with your fingers. But if you cook it with membrane still on, i doubt you will even notice it (if it is still there) after cooking Dan
