    .270 Wanted

Hi, I am after a .270 Preferably an older Tikka or Sako, ideally Screwcut and in good condition. Don't really want to spend more than £600 ish for a bare rifle but open to any thoughts if someone has something they aren't using in the cabinet....
  3. Well, going back to the original question... My Howa .243 (Varmint barrel) absolutely hated Privi 90g rounds - Proper shotgun patterns even at 50 yds!. Didn't even bother trying the box of Privi 100g I also had. Absolutely spot on with either Federal 85g or home loads in either 58g or 70g. Probably worth trying the 90g Privi but I wouldn't raise your hopes too much. A bit lighter certainly seems to suit the 1:10 twist barrel much better.
  4. Hi. Does anyone have any spare scope mounts for a Howa 1500 or Rem 700 Rifle. Preferably rings and bases for scope with 1"tube and a 50m objective lens.. Cheers Richard
  5. Sold to Gram.... Very efficient sale! 75 mins and money already in my bank account. Will be in the post as soon as the post office opens. Many Thanks
  6. I bought the T8 before realising it's not large enough internal diameter for my Howa 1500 varmint Barrel in .243cal. Could be used on any centre fire up to .30cal but obviously won't be quite as effective as a calibre specific model on the smaller cals. Overall good condition. A few external marks but nothing of any significance, no sign of internal corrosion and I understand it hasn't been used very much at all. This is off ticket so I can send through the post to your home address. Price £100. Delivered
  7. Thanks for all your thoughts. Theres certainly a vast array of conditions handed out... Probably best to speak to my FEO as he seemed very sensible and down to earth when doing the visit. Once I do get any clarification I'll post it up..
  8. Have recently received FAC for .22LR, .17HMR and .243 This is with West Mercia. There is no mentoring requirement for the rimfires but I do have one for centrefire which was no surprise as I nominated a suitably experienced open FAC holder who was happy to be my mentor. On receiving FAC I was slightly surprised that the nominated mentor isn't named. I suppose this is good in that I may have the opportunity to go out with others who are suitably qualified. Hopefully not having a single nominated mentor won't make it any more tricky to get the condition removed before too long? The actual wording is:- The .243 rifle and .243 sound moderator and ammunition shall be used for deer / fox control WHILST UNDER THE SUPERVISON OF AN EXPERIENCED FULL BORE RIFLE SHOOTER and for zeroing on ranges or land deemed suitable by the Chief Officer of Police for the area where the land is situated and over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot. This leads me to a few questions:- 1) I will assume that an experienced full bore rifle shooter is someone with an Open FAC for at least .243 cal. 2) Is there an exact definition of a Full Bore Rifle or minimum calibre? Obviously CF but....? 3) The wording states that I would need to be Supervised whilst actually performing deer / fox control. The way I read it would mean that I could perform zeroing without a mentor being present as I have suitable .243 cleared land. If I am right about this it will be good as I wouldn't want to drag someone along to zero a scope or maybe practice some 'zeroing'shots prior to taking DSC1 etc.. Is this the way you guys also read the statement ? It is theoretical at the moment as I haven't yet bought the .243 but wanted to clarify this point....
  9. Hi BJ I am a member of BASC but I don't think they have had any success with this one and west Mercia. One of the more experienced (than me!!) guys off Stalking Directory has really been pushing this and has been trying to get his MP involved as well. To be totally honest I was pretty satisfied with what West Mercia allowed me. I have got a mentor for the .243 but am quite happy with that as I won't claim to be that centre fire savvy so have plenty to learn. they did give me deer on it as well without any mention of DSC1 although I do intend to do it as soon as time and funds allow. So all in all not too dissapointed
  10. Guys, have read through all the posts and I haven't spotted any from West Mercia. West Mercia (and the neighbouring partner forces have a policy of not allowing the "Any Lawful Quarry" condition. I understand that some FAC holders are trying to push this point but to no avail so far... See the statment below regarding Conditions off West Mercia Firearms website. My FAC has just been granted with West Mercia and I have; .22LR - Vermin .17HMR - Vermin, Fox .243 - Fox, Deer Firearm Certificate ConditionsFirearm Certificate Conditions, other than the statutory conditions prescribed by the 1998 Firearms Rules, are a mechanism for the Chief Constable to regulate the behaviour of a certificate holder where necessary, on a case by case basis. The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Firearms and Explosives Licensing Working Group (FELWG) has issued advice that supports Chapter 13.14 & 13.22 of the Home Office guidance. It advised police forces to allow larger calibre rifles to be used to take lesser species i.e. where the primary reason for possession e.g. deer stalking was established, all lesser species such as foxes and pests could to be shot. This condition is expressed as follows: The (rifle/sound moderator/firearms/ammunition) shall be used for shooting (Named Principal Quarry Species) and any other lawful quarry, on land deemed suitable by the chief officer of police for the area where the land is situated, and for zeroing on ranges, over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot. The West Midlands Region (West Mercia, Warwickshire, West Midlands and Staffordshire Police Forces) have legitimately, and unanimously, decided not to incorporate this new condition. Additionally, if this condition is introduced in the future, the granting of certificates bearing this condition is subject to the approval of the Firearms Licensing Manager, based on an individual assessment of the merits of each case and will not be issued, as a matter of course, upon request.
  11. Great response, Many Thanks. I should be all sorted now as Jonesy1 is going to pick them up on Saturday. I had a feeling the power of Pigeon Watch would come through! What a site and bunch of guys.. Hope I can do the same for some of you one day Cheers, Richard
  12. Folks, I am in a spot of bother as unknown to me Pilkington Tiles have gone into liquidation and I need a few border tiles that I bought from their factory shop in Poole (Dorset) - now closed. I have found out that all the remaining stock went up to Manchester and guys in the shop there have confirmed that they have some of the border that I am after to finish a job.. Problem being they don't do mail order so won't post the few borders I need! Desperate as it is I was wondering if the power of Pigeon Watch has a member living close enough or knows someone who could pick-up and post the borders to me?? I would certainly make it worth their while to the value of £30 (plus the cost of the tiles and postage) if it saved me a trip up North for a few tiles.... Yours hopefully, Richard
  13. Thanks guys, Looks like it hopefully won't be a problem I'll get on with it and let you know how things progress. Richard
  14. Hi All, I am just about to apply for FAC and make my SGC coterminous (have held SGC for around 30 years). Have read loads on the forum regarding application / referees and also read the BASC guidance notes on applications. The one question I do have is does it matter if your referees don’t live that close to you? I can see in the ideal world the two referees would live locally to you and would then be well placed to know your domestic situation and as much as possible about your day to day life… For me however (I obviously don’t get out enough!!) most of our closest friends live 100+ miles away. I am wondering if anyone has ever come across this on an application and if it has been queried whether the referee can actually know you that well if you live several counties apart!! Thanks guys..
  15. Is the WMR less susceptible to ricochets compared to a .22LR ? I understand that FEO's often favour HMR over .22LR as a first rimfire for this reason... also as a rabbit gun does the WMR do as much meat damage as a HMR for non head shots. I know theres more energy that the HMR just wondered if the lower velocity bullet isn't quite so explosive on impact.. Thanks guys
