  2. Well, just thought i would post a thread to see what everyone else thinks or if anyone has proof or experience in this area. Ive been around keepering and pheasants my whole life and something which was grown into me was the theory that if pheasants are pushed over your boundary ie a river, then the chance of them coming back are slim.. I still believe this today and think that on my shoot we lose a fair number of birds over the river every year. Theres no better cover or food on the other side of the river to my knowledge and no rough shoot as such. What do you think? Do they come back to their home? I think birds will 'wander' home normally and because the pheasant is a walking/running bird predominantly, it wont fly across a river unless it is pushed to do so...? Any thoughts or experiences would be great!!

  4. Cheers guys, Gonna wait a bit with the retrieving until the snow is gone or she gets over it! I will continue with the ball and use a check lead. I think this is probably the way to go. I dont know where she has got this shaking thing from as she doesnt have toys she is allowed to do that with and she is never allowed to wrestle with me and a toy. She was being perfect a few months back.. :(
  5. Thanks for the advice guys, Ive gone back to a tennis ball which she doesnt shake. Ive also been encouraging her with a treat. She is bringing it straight back but dropping it at my feet. Im not to worried about the delivery yet, just need to stop her playing the goat. Its not helping with all this snow as she has never seen it before and acts like a loon! I shall keep going with the tennis ball and see if i can instill the basic retrieve, then move back to the dummy. I think a big part of it is that shes still a puppy and needs to play. Just not at the jeopardy of ruining the training.
  6. Hmm, well, dog is a black lab, 10 months old coming up, been doing heaps of obedience stuff with her and have got to a stage where i can stop her upto about 30-40yds away and sit her up, walk 100yds away etc, she walks to heel on and off lead well. I did a bit of dummy work with her a few months back, dummy in river and fields, she took to it like a labrador so i eased back on the retrieving as i was told i was running before i could walk. Now ive come back to retrieving, she shakes the dummy like theres no tomorrow and also is playing games. ive tried throwing it while shes on the lead, when sent for it, i used the lead to 'encourage' her to come back. Has anyone got any info or youtube clips to guide me for BASIC retriever training? Ive tried not making a fuss when she starts playing and walking away but this doesnt seem to be getting me anywhere. Im a bit anxious to get her back to where she was 2 months ago really. I wish i hadnt stopped..
  7. Ive had a dealing with the AA recently which left a bad taste in my mouth.. I was in the middle of the hills in SW scotland at about 10pm on a friday night when i went thru a pothole and punched a hole in my sump. I called the AA, told them what the problem was and they said its an accident, not a breakdown, they could offer a tow within a 15 mile radius but it would cost £140 + VAT and they couldnt get me home (N. Yorks). I would check with other breakdown services and see if any cover you for things like that as i basically had no choice but to pay the money regardless of being a member for years.. Its not exactly helpful, at the end of the day, i was stranded on the roadside and they werent really interested..
  8. Yeah, thats why it has 4!! pah who needs 4 engines anyways!
  9. where do you work roadkill? I used to work out of Coventry for my sins!
  10. Where do you fly from Sprackles? what do you do loops in?
  11. I wish i were in aviation 20 years earlier! The trims on some jets are a 3 click rhythmical noise from my experience, especially if flown on A/P. Obviously if the pink squidgy thing is flying it, then the trimmer moves in a more erratic way! in my experience anyways.. FFM
