Superb!!

I guess that they could be brought up the same as ferret kits. I have read in the past that they make facinating pets, and people have reared them in the past with great success.
keep us informed how things go and good luck

Bury it mate, Happened to me years ago when I had my two dogs out of their kennels and sunning themselves in the garden, Next door but ones prize persian decided to put in an appearance, You can guess the rest. :*) What a racket, not a lot you can do. Just dig a hole and pop it in. Out of sight, out of mind.

Seems like I lost out on this land. Talking to the groundsman/club sec and he has told me someone has approached him with the view to sit in a hide and shoot them, he is willing to sit as long as it takes and has already had some success.
Some you win... :yp:

Wanted live catch rat traps/ single or double entry.
Need to replace my stock as some Bas**** stole mine from a farm. :<

It is a shame to see so many country shows in this area not bothering with ferret shows anymore. I have just found out that Lowther show will not be running anymore ferret classes/shows in the future due to lack of interest, Its the same with at least four others dotted around here in Cumbria.
Is it the same in other regions? :yp:

Where I live I am surrounded by open playing fields/sport fields and then farm land and the rabbits are all over the place, scratching up the pitches etc and driving the groundsmen wild. My terriers have nailed a few but I have to be careful as some of the neighbours love them and even put food out for them!
So I think a longnet would be ideal here, but I need to get it right first time as they are very nervous and it doesn,t help with them being lampshy. I guess once they are spooked by a bodged up netting job it will be that much harder to get them.

Thanks for that information, I just thought the £200 might be a bit steep but I guess you must pay for quality.

Thats better! If you look at the picture of the two Ratting you will see that my fell bitch is untouched but "Tarka" is bitten. She just grabs the rats anywhere and usually gets bit, but the fell bitch very rarely gets touched and she catches the most out of the two! Same at ground work too. Thats why she is badly marked up but it is not always visible due to a lot of hair around her face.

Nice Dogs and Nice bag mate.

Ahh, The lakeland! The one with five teeth missing,Tip of the left ear missing and scars that would be long enough to make a broomstick! Now you don,t want me too take a picture to prove it now do you?

Hard? Diamond/ You have lost me!

o.k. That sounds good to me!

I have just been speaking to Brian Brinded of longnet fame and he quoted £200 for his quickset system which would be ideal for me, His standard nets are very good I hear but after speaking at length to him his advice was to go for the fool proof system. He said it will take up to 5 years to master the art of a normal longnet and will need two people to set it.
Anyone any advice on this? I know plenty of people who have worked longnets alone without too much bother.

Yes shoreshot Plummers books are a good read both factual and fun, Another good one that I have is the James Hawker diaries, Very old but still a great read.
-
Yes ,ratting with terriers is superb sport, especially when things go to plan.
The more time you spend with your terrier in the field the better he will become, With terriers patience is the key.
I have worked them now for over 20 years and I am still learning!

Thanks lurcherboy, I will see If I can track a copy down.

I will look out for that one Mate!
The beauty of the Pennine Poacher is you can read it time and time again and never become bored of it. He was a real character, One of many in those days I suppose.

In 1984 my Mother who was an avid book reader bought me a cracking little book named "Pennine Poacher", The nocturnal Exploits in the dales by Rabbity ****(Richard Fawcett).
This book is an absolute gem, and I urge anyone who is a longnetter or general country man to read it if they get the chance. It was published by Daleman books in 1982 and I have never seen one in any of the book shops or advertised anywhere so it could be quite scarce. Just shows how many rabbits were around in those days, he quotes in one chapter of having around 1,100 rabbits in a week using snares and long nets and all done on his own!!
Would be interested on knowing a little bit more about this supreme Poacher of the dales.

Hiya snake bite, Do you work your terrier?
-
The pictures were taken early in the year but the gloves are not worn for protection against the cold, more like protection from the little ******s biting!
I took the shots while my ratting mate did the rest!

If I were you I would try my very best to look after it, I don,t know how true this is but my mate reckons you can tame and also work them! Some people have also bred them with Ferrets!? I have heard of this but never seen one.
Good luck mate.
