  1. how much energy do you think it will take to kill a fox at that distance

I have blown the back of a rabbits head away at 220yards with a 17gn v-max

It only takes something like 6FT/LB of energy to kill a fox with a head shot

so think the power of a HMR would do it no prob

but not going in to this any more to much head work :hmm:

thanks for the lesson on how balistics work . off to shot boar with my 22lr now :lol::lol:

  2. I didn't say 160

    thats C/F

    up to 120 close range

after that I find that over that the shots will start to open up

unless you can get good groups at that sort of distance with your kit

but some will say they can hit a 1/2" group at 150 :hmm:

its not about if the round will get that far its about the energy it carrys when it hits the target and in no way is a 20gn bullet at 160 yards has enough energy to kill cleanly unless you get a lucky shot . but this is my view on the matter and many will agree too . and my head hurts too GRAM71

  3. were you of with this bute

never said anything about to wound animals at stupid ranges

I said close range on fox

223 243 for nice long shots do the job or even better I find the nice little 204 or is that to small as well

so your telling me a fox shot with a 17 hmr at 160 yards is ok with you ?

  4. well get on to them as they do

they won't down here now but did at one point for close range fox

you are right in a way with what you say

but a well placed Hmr round is better than the way some do it with a bloody shot gun

sorry but that was my point with my FEO

    and you can't always use a C/F

why not as after all the calibre has been approved for the application. i agree not every one can be granted a c,f for there permissions ,that doent give you the right to main or wound animals at stupid ranges with small calibres .maybe once they did allow 17 hmr fox ? but why would you apply to shoot a close range fox ??? as before apply for the correct calibre .

  5. what a load of **** i have been reading anyone with any sense and respects the animals will use a correct calibre for the correct job , 17 hmr is no way a fox calibre no matter if you have shot one in the head at 160 yards  , you wouldnt use a 22lr on deer would you ? as after all it has a 40gn head with a range of 75 yards ??? . apply for the right calibre for the correct job and stop being so stupid .no feo would grant a 17 hmr for fox .

  6. he didnt need a mentor for his centrefire strange i know , many have stated i should mentor him i would luv to but he lives the other side of dorset the travelling would be a nightmare everytime . with all the advice i think he will just have to wait or contact his insurance company and take it from there . i know its so fustrating but sometimes we all have to wait for what we enjoy doing . will keep you all informed as i am intrested in the outcome too :good:

  7. I can tell you one thing and that is there are so many nice looking guns about, I personaly dont know how to choose. I have this everytime I apply for a new variation!

I think I'm going to go to my local gun dealer before the variation gets granted so I dont rush into any thing and have a feel of the different guns. Seeing pictures and reviews isnt quite the same as having a grope and a feel LOL.

Ive been pleased with the CZ rifles that I currently have but I keep thinking to my self why not try something different. I do still prefer my wood stocks and I notice the browning is a synthetic. I quite like the look of the winchester 70 in .308 so I may see what that is like and if possible fire a couple of rounds.

Ill get there I'm sure I just cant wait till I do :D

its a shame as you could fire a few through mine if you were more local , i had the same problems when my variation came thro , no matter what you choose you will be happy with it :good: hope it all works out my friend

  8. a friend of mine asked a simple question which has got me a bit stumped , he looks after around 300 arcs of land which he shoots rabbits , foxes and deer on, but he has a restricted licence ,as word has got around he now has been offered to look after a few more farms too but only when they have problems with foxes ,as an when they need help . he has tryed to contact his local fac officer about this issue ,to open his ticket up but they have insisted he has a mentor to mentor him on the new land ??? which to me sounds a bit back to front .how could he obtain a open ticket without all the messing about with mentors and land checks ?

  9. unfortunally this kit you will have to disconnet the auto index system as its more suited for a 223 when using auto index , it can be used for 243 but you will have to index it yourself .when i started reloading i used this kit for 22.250 and had no real problems using it , its much cheaper than the other kits avalible. i used a rcbs hand primer as the press primer system look a bit basic and i have always used a powder despencer and not the twin disc system supplied with the press . but if your starting out reloading its a perfect press to learn with .

  10. wow really opend up a can of worms hear

thanks for all the different opinions i think it will be a s&b 8x56

just gonna start looking for a decent 2nd hand one now... if any body should hear of one please let me no

    Thanks.

give ivythorne sporting a ring ask for steve , he always has a good stock of quality second hand scopes , :good: i bought my last swaro off him and it was a bargain .
