Does the practice keep a record of my not paying and simply refuse to comply with any future request.

The practice of County Police Forces requiring a letter from the applicants GP is spreading and the Home Office has ruled that it is the applicant who pays.

Like any other business, I expect Health Practices will keep a record of bad debts and will either go through the small claims court to get their money or refuse to provide a letter next time around.  £20 is a small fee to pay when some non-NHS practices are charging between £75 - £100. Refusing to pay seems a bit blinkered when in 5 years time you are going to need to go through the same procedure again.

how do you stand at renewal time, will you have to change doctors?

You are faced with a stark choice. Change GP or approach a non-NHS practice who advertise they provide this service. You will need to obtain a print of your medical records and attend a consultation. Costs vary, but they exceed the £20 - £25 normally quoted by NHS GPs.

are the doctors allowed to charge a fee..

Fraid so; its an admin fee for the GP to examine your records and produce the required letter. Home Office guidelines state the applicant pays. I would think the money goes to the practice. Its becoming common practice & its only a matter of time before all Police forces jump on the bandwagon.

Could be worse, some GPs will not sign these letters.

  3. The recognised rubber sheet for MoD approved indoor ranges was and I believe still is, `Lynatex`. If you `google` the name you will get a lot of info.

As others have stated, its not the rubber particles you need to worry about, its air borne lead particles and toxic gas from firing that are the danger. Extractor fans at the stop butt end must produce a flow down the range to remove toxic fumes and airborne particles. There is a formula laid down on range contstruction that the fan(s) produce so many air changes per hour based on the volume of the range.

I think its this; in a country whose law and legal system is based on the principle of habeas corpus, and of innocence until proven guilty, the idea of a GP having to attest to my mental or physical fitness to own firearms before my application is approved turns this cornerstone of democracy on its head. We are all now deemed nutters until we can prove otherwise. The problem is we have to ask people that barely know us, may not approve of us and can charge us any amount they deem fair or appropriate or, worse still, simply refuse to engage.

I can live with the idea of an enduring marker, I can see the benefit, however insignificant it genuinely is, of that one concession. But the rest is simply an affront.

Further, I will state, with some confidence, that unless the British Association of Shooting & Conservation starts dipping into that often lauded '£8 million fighting fund', puts down its pen and puts to bed its platitudes and instead is prepared to don a set of gloves and risk some of those cosy relationships it has formed over the last 50 or so years that, in the words of one fierce opponent to grouse and pheasant shooting, it is well and truly spent.

You want us to 'stop bickering' and support the organisation? Then prove you have the guts and determination to challenge these amendments, to force constabularies to have more than simple 'regard' to HO guidance, put an end to the personal fiefdoms of Chief Constables, to advise on a fair set of laws with a basis in fact and proportionality, to ensure that GP's do not have the freedom to bring their own personal bias to bear, or better still, have no involvement other than to place the 'enduring marker' on an applicants record unless any medical conditions have been highlighted by the applicant in the application. Do that and you may just find you have more support and respect than you will ever need.

Strongly worded letters are lovely, but they are just that. There can be no argument that a fair set of laws, fairly and uniformly applied, is desirable for all parties. For shooters, for the government, for constabularies, for public safety (what little existing risk there is). You just need to find the means to get there but none other is as well placed for the task, but perhaps, not yet well enough equipped?

Your legal advice was that a JD was not going to succeed or make any difference? Find a new legal team. May I recommend the services of Leigh Day?

I really and sincerly hope that someone, or anyone,  at BASC HQ is reading this post from mick miller and others of a similar vein. I am not a BASC knocker and I have been a member for some considerable time; since well before the name change. I have no intention, as some have,  in voting with my feet and yet I couldnt agree more with Mick Millers remarks above. I spent 20 minutes last Sunday discussing the current firearms licencing fiasco with a BASC rep at the Game Fair, explaining in some detail why I am being forced to change my medical practice because my current senior GP has a practice policy of not responding to  Police requests for information or the now required GPs letter. While I got a lot of platitudes and soothing words, it slowly dawned on me I might as well have been talking to a loaf of bread. With an ex-military man having recently taken over the reins, I thought we might see some positive moves for them to go on the attack and address some of the problems currently being expienced by members, sadly at present this does not appear to be the case. Come on Brigadier, the old adage still applies; the best form of defence is attack. Soothing words to a frustrated membership is alright up to a point; but it would be nice to see a bit more attacking going on.

Will they pay or will it be crowd funded

You can bet your bottom dollar it wont be coming out of their personal pockets. Wild Justice are seeking the apology, not the directors personally so the costs will come out of their crowd funding pot. I should think their solicitors are rubbing their grubby little hands with glee; providing a misguided joe public continue to toss money into the pot, Leigh Day will happily keep spending it. No cost to the 3 stooges, who must consider they have discovered the original `Gravy Train`.

Pal of mine is up there for the duration. He tells me it was getting a bit muddy by COP today. He reckons take a pair of wellies, albeit the weather is due to cheer up Sunday. I have slung a pair in the car, its no fun in shoes if it turns out to be ankle deep in mud

They are keen to put themselves in the lions den, because they are likely to get what they want! ............attacked verbally and most likely physicall too!...........They are just hunt saboteurs without the hoodies and masks! Trying to provoke a reaction!

Its not likely anyone can "show them they have nothing to fear" in the forum they choose to use, such as a Gamefair, for the reasons given above! The only way I can see we could do it is in a neutral venue, as a filmed debate between two people Packham or Avery or whoever from the protectionist side, and a carefully selected  a. n. other from the shooting and conservation side.........but I believe they would never accept such a challenge because they would lose! And they know it!

My predicament is whether I can use it in wild fowling/ steel shot

There are pages & pages of information on this forum concerning the use of steel shot and the degree of choke that is deemed acceptable. The BASC website also has lots of info. The general advice is that while steel shot can be used in a gun that is not proofed for steel you should not use High Performance (HP) steel cartridges and should use no tighter than half-choke. There are a number of posts on here from members who use HP steel through their (non-steel proofed) gun on a regular basis with no evidence of barrel scoring or other damage.

At the end of the day, you need to have a read up on the various sources of information on this subject and make your own mind up. I personally restrict my AYA magnum to non HP loads, but my wildfowling ranges are usually in the 25 - 35 yard bracket and I dont feel the need for the extra bit of range and pattern density afforded by the heavier HP loads. I am not suggesting an AYS magum cannot handle HP loads; they are a big strong gun that is already proofed to a higher level than a 2.75 chambered gun.

You appear to have already received advice from ASI or direct from AYA. Have a look at the other information available and make your own mind up.

any recomendations on a decent seat for the hide

I use a cheap fold flat camping chair. It has a tubular frame with arms and a canvas seat and backrest. Cant recall where I got it but its the sort of chair that camping / caravaning shops sell. It was a bit garish in colour but I got a cheap dye for the canvas and painted the frame matt green. Its lightweight and folds totally flat for putting in the car and is a far cheaper option to those being sold by the Pigeon Shooting specialists.

Anyone familiar with AYA model 3A

From a book I have on AYA guns, the No: 3  3in. Magnum was generally imported with 30in barrels.

The 3in chambered Super Solway had 32in. tubes as standard. Both are boxlock non-ejectors with beavertail type forends and a semi-pistol grip stock.

However, like most of its production, AYA would always produce different barrel and chamber lengths to special order. Consequently there was a limited production run of a fairly small number of No:2 sidelocks imported, that were chambered for the 3in cartridge. These were ordered and sold by what was in those days `Gentrys`; now John Forsey Guns.  My understanding is that the Solway was ordered and sold by Elderkins.

The No: 4 box lock ejector also occasionally shows up with 3in chambers.

I am not sure what the `A` suffix means, in your mention of a No:3A unless it defines it as the 3in. magnum as against the No:3 which has 2.5 in or 2 .75 in. chambers.

  11. I am unsure if it applies to Avery as well, but it appears `Cwistopher` Packham has been told not to attend the Game Fair by the management.

I should think they are concerned he will start sounding-off and will end up getting dumped in the lake. He is getting like a mad-dog lashing out at anybody who challenges his distorted views and he craves the publicity that he would surely get if he was phisically mishandled by an irate keeper.

  12. I dont believe either the AYA No: 3 magnum or the Solway were originally steel proofed. Thats not to say they wont handle steel. I have a No:3 magnum that was originally full & full, to be on the safe side I had it opened up to 1/4 & 1/2. They are a big strong gun and I have no hesitation in using steel through it.

Even better if they refuse to admit him

Wouldnt have thought he is a BASC member, so he wont be getting in for free. If Mr Fake News himself;  `Cwistoper` Packham turned up he will probably end up in the lake, now that would make a good article for the BBC.

the blog contains not one shred of humour

I did have a 5 minute scroll through during a moment of boredom early this morning. I did notice he is indicating he is going to the Game Fair this coming weekend and might get a warm reception !

Not sure if he is referring to the weather or the reaction of some of the shooting community who might recognise his chubbly little face. I notice he gets quite rattled and abusive when he doesnt like some of his critics remarks.

Anyone keeping their eye open for him, I would suggest he will be found indulging in second helpings at one of the pie stalls !

our application with a dr's letter

The extract below taken from my County Force web site, indicates that the GP will almost certainly report your disability. However this does not necessarily mean you would be refused a licence. I would have thought that providing you can show your competence in handling and using a gun to your FEO that you dont have to much to worry about. A covering letter from your instructor about your ability would also go a long way to reassuring the Police that you are physically capable of handling and using a firearm.

The report will need to include whether or not I have EVER been diagnosed with or been treated for the following conditions/illnesses:Acute Stress Reaction or an acute reaction to the stress caused by a traumaSuicidal thoughts or self-harm Depression or anxiety DementiaMania, bipolar disorder or a psychotic illness, or a personality disorder A neurological condition: for example, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s or Huntington’s diseases, or epilepsyAlcohol or drug abuse.
