Hodnet is top class. Excellent facilities and clays. Wouldn't call it cheap, but not been for a couple of years. If you don't go regularly - go once - it's worth it.

  2. il cacciatore - points taken. You are obviously a fan of pumps. My first shotgun as an adult, on returning to clay shooting many years ago, was a Smith and Wesson 916. It had a suffix to denote that the barrel could be removed - they made some with the barrel brazed on. I could never get the hang of pumping, although I have seen a few who could pump fast. They were just not brilliant shots. I accept they have their devotees and properly so. I have a soft spot for autos, although I don't currently own one. I only shoot clays and have seen only three or four pump actions at a clay shoot in the last 25 years.

  3. Webber - spot on. When you become a policeman, you swear to serve all without favour. His views, if accurately reported, are a disgrace. He should resign or be sacked. Some action should be taken against the clowns who let him do this. Maybe he is young and a bit naive. Superiors should have pointed out the error of his ways. If he is to stay, he needs reminding who pays his wages and where his loyalty lies - with everyone - not a selected few.

I deal with the Police almost every day and this is not representative of the vast majority. They will be as embarassed and ashamed as I am.

  4. NJC - 10 isn't bad. My first attempt was 7/25. I've had a fair number of straights, but never enough. Took someone shooting for the first time 15 years ago. We shot Skeet. With more than his share of coaching , he got 19/25. I just likened it to his golf "follow through". I shot a miserable 21/25. Johnny said"Just think how good I would be if I shot all the time like you". I nearly wrapped the gun round his ears. I went home, thinking about quitting. Didn't last. Now all I think is about hitting more next time. If you get one 25/25 - you can get another and another.

  5. il cacciatore - Where do you get Mossbergs for ten a penny? - I'll take a quid's worth. What's up with them - might be common, but they are rugged. Why get a pump - only ever seen John Stafford DTL World Champion - who could shoot well with one - get an auto.

  6. Here are a few. There is a site called "Where to Shoot" - might be useful

    Good luck.

  7. Tony Kennedy was the last importer. You can get secondhand ones. I've had a lot of guns - still have two Winchesters and a Browning - but still looking for a 30" Laurona multi. They are blacked chromed barrels on the outside - mega rust resistant and chrome inside. Very strongly made guns.

  8. The noise - she should have expected. No sympathy whatsoever. Stray clays - that's something else. If they are sending clays on to her land, they will get closed down and rightly so. I shot at a club many years ago, whose Skeet range pellets kept rattling a local farmer's windows. The club couldn't understand his problem, which was stupid of them. They are no longer in business - I wonder why. Whether she is a crank or a bit over-sensitive, they are going to have to deal with what she says or the writing is on the wall.

  9. Use anything but D and J - felt wads. Dirtiest cartridge I have ever used, including 5000 Baikal - 20 years ago. I phoned a gun shop last week and they insisted D and J are made by Express - which they are not. They are marketed by Express and made by Rio. They are cheap - I now know why. Plastic wad shells seem very good.

  10. If Gordon Brown becomes Labour leader, they can kiss the election godbye. Whatever his qualities or shortcomings, he is plainly boring. Voters will switch off. I am still not convinced he will win the party over. Someone will emerge to leave Brown even more bitter.

  11. I have two Japanese Akitas, but much as I trust them, I would never leave them with access to any adult, let alone a child. If we have children in the house, the dogs are locked out. They are fine if either my wife or myself is present, but you just wouldn't take the risk.

  12. Posting this for a friend:-
