  1. As any one on this site or anyone you know sold up and moved to france ( or similar ) lately.

me and the misses have been talking about it for a while now , but don't really know where to start.

if you've got any first hand experience's of this , please , please let me know i need all the info i can get.

or is there anywhere i can get the information from .

    Thanks in advance .

    Darren .

  2. i,m going back to basics ( again ) on the stop whistle training , whats the best and quickest way to reinforce this command .

i have tried it before , but have not had 100% success , just this last week the masses of rabbits and the urge to chase is just getting the better of Jack ( my lab ) so need some help and advice please .

    thanks .

    Darren .

  3. Is there any one in my area Notts , Newark , Leics , Lincs borders that use's a rabbit pen for steadiness training .

Some one kind enough  , that would allow me to come along and use it to steady my boy up a bit .

There's so many rabbits around the fields where i excercise / train him , the urge is prooving a little hard to resist and he's starting to ignore my commands in favour of the real thing and bolt for the odd rabbit or two or three .

    thanks

    Darren .

  4. yes mate gravy granules ( morrisons brand ) never thought about the salt content :D:lol: .

which meat to you tend to use the most , and which cuts.

how much raw meat would i have to buy to feed him for a week, i would still mix it with the complete food as well i think . just wondering how much more it would cost as well .

    Darren .

  5. YP -- yeah thats all he gets , bit boring i agree , but these foods are supposed to be the only ones they'll need.

i give it him twice aday , with some gravy.

i wondered if it was ok for a growing dog/pup , nutrients wise etc.

i,ve read more people are giving raw meat and sometimes raw chicken to there dogs , is this safe ie. parasites and worms etc.

  6. Clarissa and the countryman - by Clarissa and sir Johnny Scott , brand new never read £10 posted.

The better shot - Holland and Holland - brand new never read £10 posted.

both books hard backs and new .

    cheers

  7. simon -- i,ve use victory mini magnums 40gm in 70mm (2 3/4) in all my guns including a old s/s , with no probs.

i think you should check your chamber size and proof ratings in kgs on the sides of your barrels first though just to be sure .

    Darren .

  8. fair comments chaps -- i agree that they could inflict pain , no doubt about that , but only if applied with too much pressure.

BUT- i have found that its working for me , i have been using one know on jack for a week and a half and it as cured his pulling and he is walking to heal very well ( while still on lead).

i'm keeping him on lead for a while know until he is perfect , then i will try the transition from lead to no lead , i understand what you mean about dogs knowing when the collar is on or not , i only put it on when working , and use a normal slip lead at excercise/ playtime , i,m quite happy with the results of the pinch collar so far. But do you think it could cause a prob in the collar on/off situation???, as per mentioned in in the electic collar post.

    Darren .

  9. Thanks again NTTF -- thats exactly the info i need.

one question though -- if i do play the tug game with my dog useing rope dog toy , will he associate that to dummies and the real thing , and therefore can it create a problem with him giving up dummies etc when working ( ie still thinks its playtime) .

    Darren .

  10. Hi NTTF -- i've just read the post , i'm not sure if thats what i ment or not ( bit confused), its another long un , can it be compacted a little.

    whats happening is this ....

Jack retrieves his dummy/bumper and brings it straight into me most of the time, but drops it at my feet or 12" in front of me about 50% of the time , the other 50% he brings it to my hands , while still standing he drops it real quick and i need to have my hands under his chin to accept it. i,ve taught him the drop word which he seems to know quite well ( probably too well, this may be why he thinks its ok to drop), but what i think i should of taught him is the hold .

what i'd like him to do is for him to sit ( or even stand) and hold the dummy, until i tell him drop.

he as no probs picking things up and carrying them ie. favourite toys etc.

and will carry things that i put into his mouth like a soft toy around the house.

i try not to play tug with him , as i was told it hardens the mouth ( is that true).

but also when retrieving he will sometimes try and get me to take it from him , while he still holds on trying to get me to play the tug game .

so all i want him to do his hold the dummy long enough to let me get my hands under his chin and give him the drop command preferbly while he's sitting.

:yp: confused , after re-reading this i am , but that the best way i can explain it.

    Thanks in advance .

    Darren .

  11. Jacks back on track now ( i think) , i,m keeping him on lead training for the next 3 weeks , but putting him in lots of different situations , where he can make mistakes and be corrected for it straight away , hopefully this will make him more steady towards other dogs and people .

BUT -- in the mean time i want to try something at home , Jack will retrieve ok mostly , but his delivery needs some work , i usely manage to catch the dummy before he drops it , by croutching down and putting my hands under his chin , but what i really would like him to do is to sit and hold the dummy for a second , then drop it on my command.

question ------ whats the best way to get him to come-in straight to me and sit and hold the dummy until released.

ps. he tends to drop the dummy first then sit.

    THANKS

    Darren .

  12. PLEASE READ .

    Thanks for your replys lads.

i'm not looking for an easy way out , i've been training Jack for 8 months now

    ( he'll be 1yr old next week).

IMO, he's being doing ok , but then i keep hiting sticking problems , as i try to move him on .

Thanks to NTTF and others, i,m now getting back on track, i went right back to the beginning and started the basics again a few months ago , he's got a great new collar ( thanks Dan) thats really helping with the heal work on lead , i'm introducing him to shot again( but this time taking it slower).

In the contolled enviroment ( field) where i mostly take him , he is great , he will recall to whistle , retrieve fur & feather dummies , sit , stay , lie down for as long as i tell him to and even stop on the thunder whistle and lie down at distance

    ( most of the time).

its when theres more distractions ie mainly dogs ( thinks its playtime) and people about that i have very little control over him , on his lead he cant do anything wrong , but off lead he,ll disobey , not straight away , but after a couple of seconds and repeated commands and he's away and returns at his will (not mine)

last night i was taking him out in the car i walked him out of the house at heal to the back of the car to put him in ( no lead on ) like i say he's usually fine doing this, but this time there was a large GSD and owner also walking down the avenue, i make him ( jack) sit stay and wait till the guy passes me , worked for a couple of seconds and then he just blatently disobeyed me and darted towards him

crossing the road in front of a car almost ending up splattered in the road .

Now what should i do , its not the first time hes broke command and made a b-line for another person/dog , the only thing i can think of is a collar that i can use to zap him the very moment that he brakes the command and tries to leave my side.

please tell me what you think ,i know he can obey me and always almost does , but in situations like this with other people and dogs , he's just oblivious to me.

I would just like to say that i do not hit him on return.

thanks for your help and advice

    Darren .

  13. As any body used a pac collar or similar to train a blatently disobedient dog , with good and quick results.

Also any opinions on them good or bad , and which are good and which are rubbish.

if fact any info at all would be usefull .

    thanks

    Darren . :yp:

  14. Hi Chris

i shot one with a recoil reducer once ( using gamebore BB's 3" carts) and i could'nt really tell the difference between the two to be honest.

by the way have you managed to find any 3.5" carts for it yet , when you do mate let me know.

since selling the nova , i've bought a beretta 302 semi ( old one), but i sold it with-in a week or so , too much fannying about keeping it clean etc.

I regret selling the Nova and i,m really considering getting another one especially for those canada's, they are brill guns and cheap.

if your thinking about selling it mate , let me know as i may buy it back .

    all the best .

    Darren .
