  1. Interesting post,   all i can add is that where i used to work, a guy before being our finance director worked as part of a chain of international insurance companies.  His words still ring true,

"if you want to make money open an insurance company, you sell a piece of paper, then when a claim is made you look for every way to avoid paying it, then you charge them more for the same piece of paper the following year"

That about sums it up for me, it seems they will look for every reason not to pay out.

BASC didn’t get ‘ shooting specified’ or exempt from Covid regulations; shooting was never included.

    Hi Scully,

Shooting was not on the list of exempt sports,  I would agree that as an organised event it could still go ahead however this means we are interpreting the legislation.

Shooting is now listed, and when you click the link on the covid government website it takes you straight to the BASC covid guidance.

This is due to the work of BASC.  it is surely no coincidence that the guidance directed to by the government is BASCs website.

Whilst we could argue that it was exempt (to which I would agree) it was not on the list, this just gives us as shooters belt and braces as it is now specified.

The very reaction of the anti shooting lobbyist shows that it was an achievement ..

For this i think the organisations deserve credit ..

    Best Wishes

Been slightly busy fighting my case  lol

    Thank you

BASC still provide the best insurance cover,

    • 10 mil Public Liability
    • 10 Mil Product liability
    • 10 employer liability
    • 250k personal accident cover
    • Automatic humane dispatch cover

They will still fight your case on firearms issues (and the firearms team and QC are the best you can get)

On top of all they they fight for shooting and educate others.

Yes they have made mistakes and done things wrong... however I do feel over the last few months their approach has improved only today they have got shooting specified on the list of except sports form covid regulations (fast track email just received)

BASC are plugging steel and Browning advertise this steel shot through BASC.

I use steel on clays cos its el cheapo, so by the power of BASC/Browning advertising its has me and I presume others looking at alternatives.

So I guess he meant im thick enough to be suckered into an ad.

Before Robertt jumps in offended, the last paragraph was tongue in cheek.🤐😁

    Advertise it through BASC? where?

  5. Hi Tim.

Your brothers gun is most likely a sporter if it came with extended chokes.

Your gun with 28" Barrels will not feel the same with the super extended chokes as Teague chokes are so thin and light.  visually it will look a little longer but will not feel the same.

Yes extended chokes do protect the end of the gun and provide ease if you wanted to change chokes between stands... a full set of 5 extended chokes will set you back around £300 ... and you will not shoot any better than you do now.

If the 30" browning feels better maybe you should consider a trade in and put £300 on top...

you maybe able to get a gun that is 30" with extended chokes .... and if the gun fells and fits better and it better balanced ..now that may improve your shooting

    Good Luck

You say, if you are a member of an organisation like the GTA, then they represent you, I say how can they represent you if they (like BASC), don't bother to consult with the membership to find out what their views are. That's not representation, that's 'we know what's best!'

Now I don't know if that is what the GTA did, but then I wasn't suggesting that the GTA talk for all the cartridge manufacturers.

But that is exactly what BASC did!

    So again

Someone lied. Who that was, we will never know.

But trying to say that the GTA was consulted, so by association so were the cartridge manufacturers, is nothing more than a cop-out.

No, not a cop out at all my point is that do these manufacturers not pay to be a member of the GTA so they can be represented?

if they did not feel they were represented with their best interests at heart surly they wouldn't be a member ?

if you belong to an organisation they will not consult you on every decision they make,. that kind of thinking stops anything happening

My point tis that GTA must have thought it was sensible and as i understand it share information with the cartridge manufacturers, ( who on another point i don't think should be consulted they are just a supplier ) they tail does not wag the dog ....

    I believe this (that is what I was sent it as anyway) was the Game Conservancy's response;

    "Sir,

I do wonder the last time Mr Liddle visited the grouse moors he rages against (Moor or Less A Desert, 13 August). It certainly wasn’t in the spring, or he would have known that by law burning ends in April - before the breeding season, rather than during it as he claims. Liddle’s fervent criticism of Britain’s grouse moors not only flies in the face of fact, it demeans the hard-working men and women managing some of Britain’s most precious habitat.
Liddle claims that ‘these moorlands are almost entirely devoid of wildlife’, when in truth breeding birds such as lapwing and curlew have thrived on grouse moors as a result of the management practices he criticises. Research has also shown mountain hares to be 35 times more abundant on moors managed for driven grouse.
He talks of 8% of land as if it were a bad thing, yet we are very lucky to have the majority of the world’s heather moorland – an internationally recognised important habitat. The public can enjoy these beautiful landscapes all year round thanks to private land managers investing huge amounts of their own time and resources to look after them.
Last week, Liddle used his Spectator column to state that ‘we are living in a post-truth society’. Those moorland conservationists, busy working for wildlife across the moors of Britain, will read Liddle’s bizarre claims and agree. If he’d be willing to discuss his assertions with those working every day come rain or shine, planting trees, clearing bracken, repairing stone walls and preventing wildfires, we are happy to put him in touch. In the meantime, the GWCT will continue to challenge misinformation in the media.
We have sent Mr Liddle a copy of Moorland Conservationists, in the hope he will appreciate the contribution of good moorland management."

Another great response well done the GWCT, thank you for sharing can you let me know how you received this? I am a member fo the GWCT also.

now where is the NGO and the CA, SACS & the SGA all organisations should be responding to these.

On the contrary, I suspect a great many do take it seriously.   Circulation of The Sun is about 1.5 million per day, and folk wouldn’t buy it if they considered the content was rubbish.   For that reason, I was very pleased to see some response from shooting organisations.

Unfortunately, your first link gave no facts to counter what McCubbin and Liddle had been saying.   The second link only told me that there were adverts in certain newspapers, but not the ones on sale in this locality.

Many folk don’t have time to click on every link.   Better to give every viewer a few facts in headline form, and then some of them might decide to read further on the subject.   There are still parts of the country with very slow broadband (our village has download speed 0.3Mb/s on a good day), and web links can take a long time to display.

Providing a lot of web links is like issuing a reading list -- a good way of forcing students to go away and find things out for themselves, but perhaps not a very effective method for getting simple messages across to large numbers of people.

The Sun is known for its poor coverage of any subject. its is a paper that is considered laughable by the majority i would say.

I agree that where ever inaccuracies about shooting are published the shooting organisations should challenge this and if able get a factual statement published.

I am please that BASC have done this.... i don't see any of the other organisations doing it though ...

Do they represent them? Or are they just members? Are all the cartridge manufacturers members? Do the GTA views match all the cartridge manufacturers views?

Does BASC represent ALL shooters? Do they have ALL shooters interests at heart? Did they consult the cartridge manufacturers?

    The questions go on!

i thought you knew the answer... given your comment on my post? and you have responded with more questions. so you do not know.

if you are a member of an organisation like the gun trade then yes they represent you.

if you are not a member of basc then the issue around the lead transition will still effect your as it is a voluntary transition from all major shooting organisations, clearly they could all see the writing on the wall ..

and yes that will effect us all if you are a member or not...

"BASC lied about consultation with ammunition manufactureres".

Are we quite sure about that? One of the more vociferous prime movers in the cartridge makers falling out with BASC stated that it wouldn`t be able to manufacture the cartridges that BASC, and lets not forget, all the other shooting organisations, hoped they would inside a timeframe that the cartridge makers alleged ran into years.

Less than six weeks later that same cartridge maker came out with a complete range of the cartridges it had just said that it couldn`t make for years. All the specialist components were developed. All the complex ballistic research and developement had been done, all the production facilities prepped and cartridge components stockpiled.

It`s just possible that BASC were not lying. Perhaps someone else was being economical with the truth.

I thoroughly agree that BASC frequently deserves a good kicking.

This is not blindly defending BASC, this is telling the truth.

Not to mention that very same manufacturer released the announcement a week early .... how can you do that if you are not aware?

I understand the GTA wee also involved in the transition ? they represent all cartridge manufacturers do they not ?

BASC have not always got it right. But to be honest i think they are definitely head and shoulders above the rest in promoting and protecting shooting.

Seriously, if you want to shoot grouse put a few quid aside each week. Skip the pub or something youd normally do. Yeah its not cheap but neither is a big pheasant shoot. If you shoot like we all do, back all types of game. Atleast grouse are wild and dependent on numbers days are numbered. Stop moaning and ne positive about shooting as a whole.

    Well said,

I know many people who actually pay for pigeon shooting.  I also know others who could not afford that.

The attitudes of some on this forum are quite frankly pathetic.

I, and thousands of others, are employed by "hooray Henrys". That's how the world works. Get over it.

Our last two days have been fogged off (the boss doesn't insure). During that time I've paid out £4600 in wages to beaters, flankers and pickers up to basically sit in a car park til midday. Money straight in to the local rural economy. £2300 a day. Not to mention hotels etc... multiply that by 28 days on average.

Some people need to wake up and look at the bigger picture.

    WR.

Commendable,  thank you for the hard work put in over the year, I hope the weather clears and you are able to get the rest of your season in.

I don't shoot grouse and probably never will as I don't have the money to. I also don't think BASC is rubbing my nose it either just the same with some of pheasant shooting I just shoot within my means and certainly not jealous of the people that do. Having money will not stop you suffering from the pandemic.

on reflection david your right i should give due credit so congratulations basc for rubbing the public’s nose in it that some can afford to shoot grouse while their loved ones are dying in a pandemic outstanding brilliant you must have brought a ban on shooting years closer to say nothing of waking up to find the sun rag has portrayed shooters as hooray henry’s slaughtering everything all thanks to basc

So I am clear what you are saying we shouldn't show people or celebrate that we shoot because there is a pandemic? are you a shooter ?

Or does your statement just relate to grouse shooting because you say afford?  you sound jealous. the majority of people up on the moor will be working class folk. beater pickers keepers. with a few guns... that is who is being congratulated not just the people who fund it ... oh yes that the guns... paying for all the conservation work horrible horrible toffs.. with too much money .... giving it to people for looking after the countryside and providing work for the local community ... this is a disgrace 🤣 we shouldn't tell anybody...

Many of the sick with covid will be be shooters and countrymen and women who would disagree with your ridiculous comment they would want it to be celebrated and go on..

i do not understand your statement regarding "Brought a ban years closer"  how ..by telling people how much conservation work goes on behind the scenes each year..

The sun will post what they want..always have no one takes it seriously .

Well my grandson was 13 last month and to date I have kept him and guns apart. As he was on holiday with us I booked him a shooting lesson with an APSI instructor and we had a great afternoon. Shooting a little Yildiz Youth 410. and a 19 gm Hull cartridge He was soon hitting clays and the smile on his face said it all. This was the best money I have spent on shooting for a very long time and I hope a seed sown for life!

    fantastic... makes your heart warm....

Well, I do have some experience of shooting quarry (feathered pigeons and furry rabbits) in a quarry (stone extraction type), and have also tried to shoot clay pigeons and clay rabbits in a stone quarry.   I have never experienced ricochet from fur or feather, but I can assure you that pellets will sometimes bounce off a hard stone surface.   Many people need to control rabbits, rats, etc, in places where there are rocks and stones on the ground.   Vermin control sometimes involves shooting near stone/brick/concrete/steel buildings.   I am not convinced that a mention of ricochet in such situations should be described as "just more scaremongering".

Regarding claims that pictures of damaged barrels have been faked, the sequence of posts is rather puzzling:

    1. "Most of the pictures on the internet of guns damaged by steel shot are bull/fake/erroneous."
    2. "And you know this for a fact how?"
    3. ".....the pictures are false made up by people who have no clue"
    4. "Is there actual evidence that those pictures are false?"
    5. "is there any proof to say they are real ?"
    6. "Your statement that “the pictures are false” seems to be just a personal opinion....."
    7. "..... we asked to see the pictures so far none have been presented."

Do these "faked" pictures actually exist?

Below is a quote direct from the university / cranfield-  on steel shot ricochets

All shot can ricochet. This is most likely to occur off rocks or other hard surfaces and, to a lesser extent, water and trees.

There is evidence that steel ricochets slightly more than lead, but this is in a more predictable path [1]. The fact remains that an unsafe shot with lead is an unsafe shot with steel.

[1] – Ricochet & Bounce Back Studies Using Steel & Lead Shot: Dr DF Allsop, Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, Cranfield University (2009).

Not sure about the second half of your post. i said i do not believe that the pictures i have seen in the past are real along with Motty.

We asked to see some to have a look. nothing has been supplied as yet. ....

The season starts in 4 days

do the bio wads generally pattern tighter with steel ? Or is that a guess

my main issue is there’s a lot of people saying you’re probably be ok it should be alright spend money on having it altered shoot more expensive cartridges no one can or will say definitely not one manufacturer has come up with a pattern sheet for a gun pattern full with lead 1/2 with steel and I’m not talking multi chokes here

Maybe you could recommend a good gunmaker that specialises in bore and regulation of shotguns for steel with a bio wad

    steel patterns tighter than lead.

Biowads perform more like plastic wads than fibre.

I speak of both in experience.

Yes of course, you do not know me from adam  the thread is regarding steel damaging your guns..

it is now expanding into bore regulation and steel and biowads. Shoot or don't shoot the choice will be yours...

if i was you i would use bismuth if you are so concerned with steel

  19. 2 hours ago, Old farrier said:

So it might damage the gun 🙄

here’s the big picture I’ve got a tight chokes gun that I’m aware of it’s killing abilities as it is but it’s not safe to fire steel through without the expense of removing over half the choke then I’ve got to regulate it to throw the same pattern that I was getting before

this is easy in a multi choked gun not something that is undertaken lightly in a fixed choke gun

you can see that the walls arnt thin at the muzzle and the bores measure as original opening them up will only make them thinner

the problem is that the major shooting organisation gave no thought to this or to the cartridges for game shooting where the majority of the short chambered and tightly bored guns are used

No it won't damage your gun if you do as guided..

Have the chokes taken out to half, generally steel patterns tight so it will be comparable to shooting full choke - failing that shoot bismuth no adjustments needed.

Your last sentence is probably the main crux of your issue, however had they not done anything there's a good chance a ban would be in sooner rather than later and we would all have major issues. for instance there would be no suitable cartridges for the majority of guns.

It has given the cartridge manufacturers the kick up the A ** they need to get producing suitable cartridges for all.

You can already get ammunition from eley, gambore, jocker, bio ammo, and rio ammo. in 5 months... where will we be in 5 years..

Mr packman has made it clear in the latest field sports journal that he wants a ban on lead now. I am sure he will be pushing for this.

I think we have been bought some time and over the next 4 years we need to find out what works for us and work with the manufacturers to get what we need at the right price.

it is going to happen either way, it is better that we lead the change than an outright ban.
