  1. Picked up DB at 11.00 and set out in anticipation of a good day. After 90 miles and eight other shooters on some of our stubbles we found a field that had few pigeon on it but covered as you would expect. it was now 14.00 and DB had got to be back for a family party at 17.30. so we set up and shot for two hours and ended up with 107. This was thanks to another shooter down wind of us who kept sending us a constant stream of spooked birds which gave us some fantastic moving shots. The dog was not impressed as he was running around all over the field picking up

Picked DB up at 9.00 and set out to a rape stubble field that the farmer had rung us about saying that it had a good covering of birds and would give us a good days sport. When we got to the field it had a contracter cleaning out the ditches and making a hel of a noise shaking his bucket, so we left.

We drove to a field that we had seen birds crossing the river to when we drove home the day before. this was an old barley stubble and had a few birds down. We set up with a fresh wind of our backs but had to make a lid for the hide due to the strong hot sun. We had some high trees directly infront of us on the edge of the field and the birds were coming in high then dropping for the decoys. As we had limited freezer room we joked that we would have to stop at two hundred. As the day went on we realised that this could have been a mega day as we stopped shooting at 14.30 as we estimated that we had enough for the freezer, we ended up with 223.

I now nead the game dealer to call this week to allow us out to play next week.

    Good shooting

  2. I carry a 10 inch piece of round steel bar and a cut down hammer in with my kit and hammer it into the ground. This make the poles nice and rigid and in the summer when its hot the poles are firm enough to hang your coat on and pick the cartridges out of the pockets when shooting in your shirt in the hide. The extra weight of the bar and hammer is approx 25 cartridges.

    Good Shooting

  3. I recently went to a Car Boot and bought two Carp Sacks 4ftx3ft with a zip on the long edge for a £5 I wet them and keep the birds in the back of the hide. As they are a very fine and stong net I only get flyblow on the outside of the bag and clean birds for the freezer.

  4. Following a frustrating Spring with many phone calls from farmers with birds on their rape, we found that most of the birds were flying over the rape to get to the clover. We had reasonable bags of 60's and 70's. We then got some calls on the seed but nothing mega. Following 5 weeks of Holidays etc, we had a call on the rape stubble. DB and myself positioned ourselves on an old rape stubble field while the farmer combined his other rape fields and managed 149. (see 1st Photo)

The next day we looked at the wheat - no birds....

    Barley stubble - No birds!!

We eventually found them on another rape stubble field which was just being ploughed. We spoke to the farmer and he said that he would be off at 2pm to combine his wheat. We shot until 6pm and ended up with 170!!

On both pictures you will see DB's new dog who worked excellently picking up down birds from out of the river which we would have lost.

We did have a phone call from Dave K's Mafia that birds were travelling over the motorway. We had a good look around but could not find any. This could have been to put us off the scent!!

  5. I used one on the wheat last year its shape was just right for the tramlines and it pushed the wheat out of the way, it managed all my geat and 125 pigeons back to the car. The only modification I made was to fit a wider blow up wheel from a scrap barrow at my daughters stable, this made it a bit more stable and the bonus is it folds flat in the car and garage.

  6. I,ve seen this a number of times in the Midlands, all the pigeons round us have six claws per leg due to the inbreading!!!!

I also had Buzards take my decoys twice. All this when you do not have a camera ready

  7. I've been out with DB chasing up the farmer's requests for the pigeons manly on the rape but on setting up we have found them to be decoy shy. this gives you some great distace shooting but also is frustrating as we did not understand why they would not decoy? so we took the magnet out of the patern and things did improve. So are magnet shy? I decide to walk the hedges, now the farmer told us it had not been shot!! I found three well used hides all with fresh cartridge cases in them( scuffy Bs) so they have been shot at. We ended the day with 51

Went out with DB and tried the rape again three hundred birds one shot all gone we managed ten in the following hour so we rang around and one farmer told us that they were on his clover and it was blue all over. So quick pack up and fifty mile drive and yes there were about 150 to 200 on his clover we set up with the ten fresh birds and the magnet. they would not come near we packed the magnet away and they kept coming in tens and fifteens but we ended the day with 94.

I had a contact call with a farmer saturday night can I come and shoot the rape so I went out this morning and travelled light gun, Hide, 3 poles, cartridges, flask and two fresh birds. walked across three fields to the rape and set up. With the strong east wind I set up in the hedge and put the two decoys 40 yards out in the field on bike spokes as props. Every bird that came to the field went over my decoys and was shot at. I ended the day when the snow showers started with 39 pigeons and 2 crows. I always remember an old traning instructer saying to me KISS( Keep It Simple Stupid) All I did today was to place birds when they were shot on props as if they were feeding ,no gadgets just birds.

The question is are we setting up to how we always shoot or using fieldcraft and looking at the field and watching what the birds are doing. Are we using too many magnets and spooking the birds before they get to the killing area??

  8. Following a phonecall from a farmer again stating there were 100's of pigeons on his rape. When we got there they were all on the clover next to the rape and sitting in the trees between it.

Has any other member got pigeons that have a preference for clover over rape??

Ended up the day with 66 in the bag but they were difficult to decoy.

  9. Hi Nial, My Camo net is a basic ex army net with long strips of material woven in to stop it blowing around in the wind also it can keeep you warm. To get the right material I went to an indian sari shop with hawthorn , holly and grass leaves and bought four meters of of these colours and also light brown and dark brown. When I got home I cut them into 2 inch wide strips, set my net up in the garden and wove them in very lose. I put the greens on the one side and the browns on the other i.e. winter and summer.

    Happy weaving

  10. Happy New Year to all Pigeon Watch members - We have been busy chasing rabbits and pigeons. Please find some pictures of our recent ventures (ignore the date, forgot to set the camera after removing battery - its not 2004!!)

    82Birds.jpg

Out on the first after a phone call from the farmer whith birds on his rape. Finished up with 82 hard earned birds due to the fact that they kept coming in in 20's and 30's. Overall still a good day but cold!!

    85Birds.jpg

Asked by a farmer to shoot his rape, but found the birds on the next field feeding on the clover. Got permission and ended up with 85 pickup. But same again - birds in flocks!!

    69Birds.jpg

Another call from a farmer for birds on his rape. The rape leaf is about the size of your thumbnail!! however the birds were still piling in. Finished up with 69, but flocked up again. They just do not break off. Was out the day before with DB and we shot rape and picked up 101 (honestly) but unfortunately no picture. DB no patience as he was cold (-2 degs). The bigger pickup was due to the farm shoot moving the birds on for us.

Will keep you informed with any major changes in flock details.

  11. After having some success with a dozen picture wire snares I made myself I decided to buy 500grams of brass wire and 100 brass eyelets from Euroguns Doncaster. The only trouble is that the wire is single stranded. Has any body got a link to show me how to twist up to make it multistrand. I made my first snares by cutting a 24inch length and fitting a 50pound fishing swivel as the eye and this has worked well.

I would welcome any constructive advise.

  12. We went out yesterday and checked four farms for pigeons on the rape. none on the first three but we found them on the fourth. The fog was so thick we ended up standing on the hedge between two fifty acre fields and shot the flightline.Ended up with 73. no pictures as we were to lazy to walk back to the car and back again we just carried the birds off the field. Its nice to see them on the rape at last.

  13. I've been asked to reduce the rabbits on one of the farms that I pigeon Shoot but it's dificult to ferret and longnet so I decided to dig out my air rifle to shoot it at night. I have a HW97K with the 6volt Deben Tracer compact. I bought it as it was a bargain at the time and other than taking the occasional squirrel in the garden have never used it in a rabbit campaign.

I have a number of questions:-

If I just use a red filter on the light will that allow me to shoot without disturbing the rabbits too much??

If you fit an infrared lens on the light and scope will that work or do I have to buy an infrared iluminator??

I also have a red dot sight I can fit but will that spook the rabbits if you flash it past there eyes??

I will be shooting well into dark with no residual light at all so I need to see the targets to shoot them

I know that I sound like a real novice but it's a something that I've never done before other than shooting rats 40 years ago with bread spread out around a candle lamp using open sights.

    Any info will be welcomed

  14. Last weekend I had two phone calls regarding pigeons on the rape so I set out for first light to watch for birds comming out of roost. After an hour of daylight nothing other than a few crows looking for slugs or worms. I decided to go back home and pick up the ferrets and long net the hedges. So after two or three hours ended up with 6 nice rabbits, the farmer pulled up in his disco and said I'd done a good job scaring the pigeons off the rape!!!!

On the Friday (07/11/08) picked up DB from work at 13.00pm and we picked up on a flightline to an area if approx half an acre of hawthorn scrub which was full of pigeons next to an old stubble field. We set up on the stubble and ended up with 110 pick up but none of the birds decoyed into the pattern but came close enough to be cracking shots.

Last Friday (14/11/08) went with DB after work to the same field but the birds were at the other end of the field due to the wind direction. we had to set up on a small corner of the field to prevent shooting over a public footpath and away from an old farmhouse. we had about 25 birds when a woman came over to us and asked us to stop shooting as it was spooking her two horses. We informed her that we were shooting away from the house and last week she'd not complained. We agreed to stop shooting for half an hour so she could put the horse in the stable. We then carried on when the estate manager came over to us to ask us to stop as the woman in the rented farmhouse had said that we had been shooting at her house and that she was concerned that we could shoot her children when they come back from school!!!

We picked up 69 pigeons and then had a confrontation with a guy as we drove back through the farm yard.

As the estate manager said to us that why do people rent in the country if they do not understand what goes on he told us that they had complaind to the ajoining farm when he muckspread his land.

Sorry about the content of this acticle but I just want to get it off my chest.

I see the lads in the east of the country are getting birds moving on to the rape anbody in the midlans seen them bother with it yet? They all seem to be on acorns, hawthorns and chestnuts by us.

  15. Always wear some protection even if it's the yellow foam cylinders.

I've lost 75% in my left ear and 50% in my right along with tinnitus only because I was to Macho to wear defenders when I was shooting.

Once you've lost it it won'nt come back!!!!

  16. I've been asked to ferret a old bomb crater in the centre of a rape field which the rabbits are grazing it down to the ground. Last year the farmer lost half an acre of wheat to the same rabbits.

I longnetted the dell last year but the ferrets killed underground and I tried to dig then out but the ground is full of old fencing wire, scrap machinery etc. Ihad to leave them overnight and temp them out in the morming with a freshly gutted rabbit. I do not want to put ferrets in the dell this year.

I've had two ideas one is to longnet the dell and run a chain saw engine minus the blade and try and smoke them out into the net or put red diesel down the holes and try the get them to move to other berries that I can ferret.

Has anbody tried this before and will it work???

Or has anbody got any ideas other than sitting out allnight and trying to shoot them.

  17. During my training I was taught to hold the scope on the target and breath with the cross hairs moving up and down over the target hold your breath bring the cross down and fire. I believe this is the method used by the athletes in the Nordic events.

    Be confident!!!

    You are a good shot!!

  18. I had three sisters who have served me well and I went to the hutch the one morning and they were all curled up in the open cage rather than in the sleeping quarters. What had happend the one had died and the other two were trying to keep her warm. People say that if you kill animals for sport you have no HEART I must admit I had a tear in my eye when I buried her in the garden.

Hard luck mate but I know that you gave her a good life

  19. I spent a wonderful day a my daughters stables winterizing her tack shed the prevent even more rats using it as an overnight hostel. While we were working some of the other girls were riding the fields and kept disturbing the pigeons off the acorns at one point ther must have been 200 birds in the air. Of course every one that flew over the shed I hit ( I wish).

The owner of the yard and land is a funny old boy he loves to eat the pigeon and rabbits that I drop at his back gate but will not let anyone shoot or ferret the land.

Keep an eye out on any woods you have as they could produce some decent bags at this time of the year.
