Those who know me know very well that i am not a fan of football. I am no doubt in the minority but i could literally fall asleep watching the game. I could not get any sense from anyone at lunchtime today so i took the afternoon off. I had been asked to shoot pigeons on peas by two farms this week and although i knew numbers on either farm was nothing spectacular i was keen to show willing. I looked at both of the fields yesterday and decided the field with best prospects was one were JDog and i shot a few weeks ago.I decided to leave the magnet at home and travel light with only 100 cartridges and 5 dead birds. I arrived at the field at 14.10 and set up my stall. The first hour was very slow and i was starting to regret not taking the magnet. I managed just 6 birds in the first hour and many of these passed shy and wide, luckily i had my full choke trap gun and managed to down a couple of nice crossers. After 6 birds down i had a tidy up and put out a dead bird on a floater and the remaining birds on cradles as the peas have grown a fair bit now. As my pattern of dead birds grew so did the pigeons confidence and by 15.30 i had 20 birds on the clicker. Two fields away on land i can't shoot a pea field in flower had a good 100+ birds on it, no doubt causing considerable damage. As the hours rolled by the pigeons decoyed as well as i could have hoped and i started to bond with my trap gun and shot pretty well with it. At 6pm the pigeons had all moved over to the flowering peas and although i could have shot a few more i packed up with 53 woodies and 1 carrion crow for 73 shots. A lovely afternoon and it beat the hell out of watching football. I took the birds straight to the gamedealer as flies were becoming a pain. 4 or 5 of the birds were young squabs. 1 gun for Monday the 2/05/16 must have insurance and own gear, meet for about 7am shot untill 1ish or stay longer if day goes good will be decoying on drilled peas. Dave

Having finally managed to contact the farmer last night we met him this morning and looked at two fields of peas. One was 13 acres and the other one 14. Three miles from home and a mile apart. We set up under a large tree with the sun in our faces and a light breeze from behind. As the sun rose the the hide was in the shade and we had some sport/pest control action Hatsanman with 23 Wood Pigeons, 4 Jackdaws and one Magpie not recovered, all in all a very pleasant spot of shooting.

When do pigeon usually start feeding on peas I've got 6 fields of them on my permission about an inch high not a pigeon to be seen ??
