steve_b_wales
I'm looking to purchase a dedicated Gen 1 NV scope to use occasionally with my 22-250. I have added IR light by means of a cluson lamp fitted with NV filter. I used to have a Cobra Merlin NV with scope adaptor, but found this too cumbersome. Price range will be around £500. Any thoughts? Thanks Steve.
grasshopper
Save your money, all Gen 1 stuff is ng for C/F rifles, although the farmer i sometimes shoot with has a Cluson with ir filter and picks foxes eyes up at over 100yds...but thats it,eyes and he usually gets me to verify. Spend more and go for a Gen 2+ or Gen 3,otherwise forget the Nv route,it,s too expensive if done effectively,i.e. longer distances. Sorry for putting a dampener on it for you Steve
steve_b_wales
No problems there Grasshopper. I appreciate your honest advice, Cheers Steve.
Shootingman
Steve, as Grasshopper says save your money m8, a guy that lamps a lot with me ( you met him once) uses a gen 1 for spotting & it useless. Mike.
steve_b_wales
Useless in what way? Is the distance he can see with, limited? Or the clarity of the image viewed? I would use one with a 2million CP Blazerlight with NV filter. When using this with my Cobra Merlin, it was brilliant.
drut
Its a few years since I tried Gen 1 NV (D141M) so all I can tell you is probably out of date. I found the magnification(or lack of it) quite a problem, managed to see reasonably out to about 70yds when used with a lamp with IR filter, eyes I could pick up much further.I am sure others managed a lot better than me but the lack of range, plus high scope height & having to constantly fiddle with the focus put me off.I did have some success with static ambush on rabbit warrens. Not safe on a centrefire as you can't see what's behind the target, keep a look out for a 2nd hand SDN day and night scope, you can see forever with a Dipol laser, and 6x mag well capable of 300yd foxes with practice. I bought a new one almost 3 years ago, which is now on a Steyr SSG 22/250 (98 foxes since November last year) I just bought another one, 2nd hand, that retailed at £2800 pounds in Feb this year. Paid 1500 for it. I've put that on my new Anschutz 1417, and at the moment I am doing .75" groups at 50yds with both the day and night facilities. I have seen 2nd hand Gen 2 stuff for as little as a grand. If you go down the night vision route I would recommend trying before you buy, and pay as much as you can possibly afford. Haven't looked where you are in the country, but if you're not too far, you're welcome to come and try my gear. Andy Just seen that you're in Wales, offer still stands if you ever get over this way though Edited September 27, 2009 by Doggone
steve_b_wales
Hi Andy. Thanks for the advice and the kind offer. If I can manage to get time off work, I may take you up on your offer. I was only intending to shoot at foxes at a maximum of 80-100 yards. I'll have to empty my piggy bank and see what's in there. Regards Steve.
Shootingman
As already said, lack of magnification, only see out to approx 70 yds (eyes only a little further) & cannot see whats behind eyes.

Personally I would love some good nightvision (out of my reach moneywise) but would like to see it in use first. One thing I did forget to mention was that the D141 was more suited to rabbits(in my hands at least) than fox,the foxes I spotted through it never seemed to pause for long enough for me to focus & compose shot, maybe a bait station might have worked but I thought at the time a NV spotter & then lamp might have been a better option for me. steve_b_wales
Baiting for a fox is what my intention was with NV. There is the ATN Aries NV scope which boasts x5 magnification. As said, I would probably be shooting up to a 100yards max. Extra IR would be added by means of my blazerlite, fitted with NV filter. When I tried this with a Cobra Merlin, that I used to own, I could make out a 'fox size' target up to 250 yards, although I would not shoot at it at that range. A lot of my NV shooting would also be around the farm buildings (40-60 yards)
