henry d
I went out last night on the area I have been given for culling roe and reds, however I wanted to try an area I haven`t been in a while. I parked up and basically there is a farm track with wood one side and field the other, within 100yds I spotted a young (2 pointer) buck and as it was too light in the body I decided not to shoot it. I got to within 30yds of him before he spotted me and ran off into the woods. I then disturbed a doe, possibly his twin sister, and carried on to the clear felled area. The plan was to either carry on to the high seat about 1/2 mile away or to stake out some whins that surround the plantation the other side of the clear fell. When I got to 120yds from the whins the light was starting to go so I sat amongst some cut logs in a ditch as these provided a hide, however apart from some pheasant and rabbits nothing came out. After a while, as the light was really failing, I decided to go back the way I came as I thought I might see something out in the fields. Just as I got to the end of the clear fell I heard a stag roar in the woods between me and the car and as I had the .222 I quietly cursed my luck, after a minute or so I started to walk on again and behind me in the field came another roar I slowly turned about and saw the bulk of this bad boy and he was walking at a quick pace towards me ! I took a look at him through the bins and he had a good set of antlers on him and I counted 14 points !! He got to within 100yds and then jumped the fence and walked towards me bellowing, I then took the rifle off my shoulder as I was sure this lad was about to charge me, when he suddenly got a whiff of my scent and did a 180 and ran off .....PHEW ! I didn`t think the .222 would have stopped him but I was glad to have it with me. So that`s 1-0 ! This morning I went, with the 6.5, to the other area where I have seen another big stag, a 6 pointer and several youngsters with 2-4 points and it is these youngsters that I was after. I used the NV to get me safely and quietly to the field I wanted to be at before dawn and all went to plan. I sat under a Scots pine and waited for dawn to start lighting the sky and I was glad of the shelter it provided as it started to rain. I heard several stags roar in the woods behind me, it sounded like 3 seperate beasts and I had expected them to be out in the field Anyway as it got bright enough to see I made out a big sdhpe in the field and glassed it, and surprise it was one of the youngsters and just behind over the rise were 2 more, and better still they were walking towards me I was being eaten alive by midges as there wasn`t a breath of wind so I was confident of a shot, however at about 250 yds his head shot up as he had been just walking and grazing until then and 2 seconds later he was off taking the others with him When I looked up at the sky there was a wind higher up and from behind me and I suppose my scent could have been blown that distance to him. Onward and upwards, there`s always this evening...... and tomorrow morning and tomorrow evening...... So that`s 2 - 0 to the deer then
Alpha Mule
Not quite the same caliber (geddit?) but I had a similar night last night. I only saw 5 rabbits and 1 fox, 3 times! Every time I got a bead he showed up and the little guys caught his scent and scarpered. Pity I only have a 12ft/Lb air rifle, because he was asking for a hole in the head! Frenchieboy
Nice write up Henry - I'm sure that you will agree when I say that is realy what it's all about! It's pitting your skills and whits against the prey you are stalking, and the actual taking of the shot (And hopefully the kill) is an added bonus! To me it's just a real pleasure to be out enjoying the wildlife and the "peace and quiet" even if I don't get a shot in. Patience is the name of the game
