hello,

I currently own .22 s410k airarms air rifle(standard) and a winchester 12g shotgun, and would like some advice on what gun would be suitable for shooting rabbits(at long range), hares, and foxes. and how I go about getting a licenec for this gun, I do shoot rabbits with air rifle, and I have shot a fox with shotgun when lamping,

last 2 days ive been out with s410 and come accross a hare and a fox but would not be confident killing any with standard air rifle, :< (hare mabe at close range) "but the wind has not been in my favour", sorry to be a pain but how many £ am I looking at to purchase one of these rifels.

thank you in advance.

Hi Kipper,

A .22 Hornet, would suit your needs i would think.

It is quiet, range is 200yds max and ammo not too expensive.

CZ make a great rifle in .22 Hornet and great value for money aswell  .

Im not sure about price over their in England as i live In Ireland, but i would imagine you would pay around £400 to £500 for a CZ 527 .22 Hornet.

You will need a good light gathering scope, of say 8x 56 magnification.

Nikko Stirling are good scopes and great value for money  .

Ammo wise the Hornady 35 grain v.max and Winchester 46 grain hallow point, both in factory ammo are pretty good.

Then their is the new .204, but this may be a bit too powerfull for what you need and ammo is more expensive, but it is amazing in taking out rabbits out to 300yds  .

Go For the Hornet, you wont be disepointed  .

It should be easier to licence as well.

That i cant answer Kipper, somebody with more experience with air rifles can answer that one.

All i can is that, air rifles wont have the same range as say a .22lr rimfire rifle. .

The .22 lr will have more range and power to cull rabbits.

what sort off range can rabbits be safely shot, with a standard air rifle(air arms s410).

Kipper

With 12ft lb in .22 try to operate no further than 35yds and this in my opinion is the maximum range for a CONSISTANT humane kill, but bear in mind everyone is different and it's up to you to find out what you ,your gun and ammo can consistantly perform at .

I have the FAC version of this gun 35ft LBS and only operate around 60yds though the gun can kill humanely at 80yds but the conditions have to be right before i take these sort of shots.

AS for progressing up the ladder with rifles for long range; 200yds is a long way and you'll no doubt get closer to your quarry with a bit of field craft but i'll put some more suggestions forward based on my experience.

.22 rimfire........Can be made silent using sub sonic ammo 80yds&100yds with mini mags (Ruger 10/22 £225-£300)

.223 With again the right ammo 300yds (tikka £500)

17hmr I'm after one of these myself so i can,t really comment but i'm looking to operate around 150yds(£345)

A thing to consider is the noise high velocity ammo makes even with a silencer fitted and whether the police will pass the land as safe to shoot using a ctr fire although the .22 hornet would be a good choice

As for a scope Simmons deerfield 33*9*50 £90 as good as anything for vermin control

My advice is build yourself up slowly by putting your field craft to good use before taking shots at 200yds+:lol:

There is nothing Sporting about shooting hares though kipper as you can usally get quite near to them ,Just my opinion :lol:

Hi Kipper

I agree with all the above chaps. I might add that for ease of license approval perhaps and access to police cleared land, a .22LR Rimfire is your best bet. Less scary to the law than a centrefire, great for Rabbit out to 100yds, possibly even a tad further. Also OK for fox although not the ideal (which is usually .223 centrefire), but can humanely drop Charlies as long as range isn't silly and your shot placement is good/consistent.

As mentioned, with a £30 silencer and subsonic ammo its as quiet as an air rifle too, so you won't scare 'em all away with your first shot, as you would with a centrefire.

You can also get .22 calibre as a semi-auto if you fancy that sort of thing. CZ are terrific and well priced, either new or S/Hand.
